A Comprehensive History of Japan

A History of the Japanese People is a comprehensive history of the Japanese Empire from its mythological beginnings up to the date of publication in 1912. Because the copyright has expired, it can be downloaded free, which is very convenient for anyone who wishes to learn more about the earliest Japanese history. Naturally, this book cannot cover more recent events, including World War II and after, but the lack is more than made up for by the authors' exhaustive coverage of Ancient, Medieval, and early modern Japan.
The first chapters do drag a bit as the authors describe the mythological history of prehistoric Japan. The myths and legends are rather disordered and the names of the gods are confusing and repetitive. Once they move on to firmer ground, the story becomes more engrossing.
Despite the excellent quality of this work, two weaknesses made the book less than completely satisfactory. First, the kindle edition does not include the illustrations or the maps. I could do without the illustrations, but at least one map of the Japanese islands would have enabled me to follow the events better, especially the military campaigns. The second weakness is that in a comprehensive history such as this, there are many unfamiliar (to the Western reader) names and terms and it is sometimes difficult to remember them all. A glossary would have been helpful. Despite these weaknesses, I highly recommend this book.
I might add, not as part of the review, in light of later events in Japanese history, it is a bit chilling to read the authors defense of Japanese aggressions in Manchuria and Korea, especially when they suggest that the Japanese annexation of Korea in 1910 was for the benefit of the Korean people. I think few Koreans would agree with that sentiment.

Japanese History

I am a history teacher and this book has been more than adequate in helping me preparing for teaching according to the standards of California. This book is very comprehensive so you should search your Kindle for key words like, Prince Shotoku, Daika Reforms, and Sengoku Jidai. That should make reading the book a lot more easier. The vocabulary can be extravagant at some parts but if your reading it on the Kindle you can easily scroll down to the word and find the definition, but if your reading the actually paper back you better have a dictionary close by and good luck! You cannot beat the price of free for a comprehensive scholarly source of Japanese History. Enjoy!

The Wrong Impression.

The only previous reviewer made this book sound horrible, but sometimes I don't really care. This does have a slight overabundance of words, indeed where a few less would have done the same job. That is not hindering as much as he made it seem. As a high school student, I can say that this is superior to my writing and I am an above average writer for my age group.

About the Author

Neil A. Campbell (1946-2004) combined the inquiring nature of a research scientist with the soul of a caring teacher.  Ove his 30 years of teaching introductory biology to both science majors and nonscience majors, many thousands of students had the opportunity to learn from him and be stimulated by his enthusiasm for the study of life.  While he is greatly missed by his many friends in the biology community, his coauthors remain inspired by his visionary dedication to education and are committed to searching for ever-better ways to engage students in the wonders of biology.

 

Eric J. Simon is a professor in the Department of Biology and Health Science at New England College (Henniker, New Hampshire). He teaches introductory biology to science majors and nonscience majors, as well as upper-level courses in tropical marine biology and careers in science. Dr. Simon received a B.A. in biology and computer science and an M.A. in biology from Wesleyan University, and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Harvard University. His research focuses on innovative ways to use technology to increase active learning in the science classroom, particularly for nonscience majors. Dr. Simon is also the author of the introductory biology textbook Biology: The Core and a coauthor of Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections, 8th Edition.

 

Jean L. Dickey is Professor Emerita of Biological Sciences at Clemson University (Clemson, South Carolina). After receiving her B.S. in biology from Kent State University, she went on to earn a Ph.D. in ecology and evolution from Purdue University. In 1984, Dr. Dickey joined the faculty at Clemson, where she devoted her career to teaching biology to nonscience majors in a variety of courses. In addition to creating content-based instructional materials, she developed many activities to engage lecture and laboratory students in discussion, critical thinking, and writing, and implemented an investigative laboratory curriculum in general biology. Dr. Dickey is the author of Laboratory Investigations for Biology, 2nd Edition, and is a coauthor of Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections, 8th Edition.

 

Kelly Hogan is a faculty member in the Department of Biology and the director of instructional innovation at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, teaching introductory biology and introductory genetics to science majors. Dr. Hogan teaches hundreds of students at a time, using active-learning methods that incorporate technology such as cell phones as clickers, online homework, and peer-evaluation tools. Dr. Hogan received her B.S. in biology at the College of New Jersey and her Ph.D. in pathology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Her research interests relate to how large classes can be more inclusive through evidence-based teaching methods and technology. She provides faculty development to other instructors through peer coaching, workshops, and mentoring. Dr. Hogan is the author of Stem Cells and Cloning, Second Edition, and is lead moderator of the Instructor Exchange, a site within MasteringBiology® for instructors to exchange classroom materials and ideas. She is also a coauthor of Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections, 8th Edition.

 

Jane B. Reece has worked in biology publishing since 1978, when she joined the editorial staff of Benjamin Cummings. Her education includes an A.B. in biology from Harvard University (where she was initially a philosophy major), an M.S. in microbiology from Rutgers University, and a Ph.D. in bacteriology from the University of California, Berkeley. At UC Berkeley and later as a postdoctoral fellow in genetics at Stanford University, her research focused on genetic recombination in bacteria. Dr. Reece taught biology at Middlesex County College (New Jersey) and Queensborough Community College (New York). During her twelve years as an editor, she played a major role in a number of successful textbooks. She is the lead author of Campbell Biology, Ninth Edition and Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections, Seventh Edition.

It was half of what I ordered

I ordered this book but WITH the lab codes and guess what? They did not work. If you need the lab codes for your class DO NOT buy from amazon, they are charging you for something that doesn't even work! The book was fine but I ordered it for the lab codes and was more than upset when I had to rebuy the codes for $50.

Floppin' all over the place

Whoever thought it was a good idea to make this thick book a softcover, I tell you: it was not. The shear weight of this book, combined with the thin, slippery cover, makes it difficult to hold onto the book. Additionally, for whatever reason, whenever I put this textbook into my messenger bag (a regular messenger bag, nothing special), it always ends up bent and wedged under my other books. It's hard to even pull it out because there's no friction. I try to keep my things nice, but this book was the only one in my possession with dog ears and crinkles after merely one semester of use.

Asides from the obvious issue, this book was very informational and to the point, and it explained difficult aspects of biology in such a simple, succinct manner that I learned more from it than I did in many of my previous textbooks. I know I might be unfair if there is a hardcover available, but if there is not, this book can be a hassle. Get the hardcover.

Geoff Aigner and Liz Skelton are both senior managers, educators, and consultants for Social Leadership Australia at The Benevolent Society. This is not a book for the faint-hearted! Certainly it does explain much about leadership in Australia - we are a peculiar mob. The authors begin by giving an overview of a brief history of what, why and how the perspectives of leadership in Australia is where it is. And then - you are challenged. Challenged to reflect on your view and your own actions (functional or not). It is not a book that you can pick up and read quickly - it is a book that will give food for thought, and a framework in which to process and develop your own notions of leadership. Read it while journalling.

Why Australians need to become better at leadership

For many years Australians have been uneasy with power, complaining about it and avoiding it in ourselves and others; wanting it but being scared of it, having seen what it did when it failed; looking to others overseas and "higher up" for the answers, according to Geoff Aigner and Liz Skelton in this book. It is time to demand that leadership be exercised more effectively in Australia.

The authors describe four interesting paradoxes:

* Anti-authority and authority dependent: Always looking to the centre or top of our organisations for help or to find someone to blame, we have a high dependence on authority but a low degree of trust.
* Egalitarian and hierarchical: We pride ourselves on our political, cultural and social equality, but at the same time Australia rates poorly for income inequality, and as our organisations have grown larger, so has the use of hierarchy which undermines equality.
* Relational and competitive: Our culture of "mateship" and positive social relationships mean that, outside of the sporting domain, it is awkward to discuss and engage in competition, so that innovation becomes difficult.
* Battling adversity and living in prosperity: We like to see ourselves in a story of overcoming great adversity, but this means that we lead well in times of crisis but poorly in times of prosperity like the present.

In order to forge a new Australian leadership story, the authors assert that we need to become more comfortable with understanding, owning and exercising power and authority, and using and leveraging our leadership roles. We need to be more open in the way that we handle conflict, and in our approach to competition, growth and innovation.

I found most of the authors' arguments persuasive. I agree that the practice of leadership in Australia is more difficult than in some other countries where people are more used to exercising power or faithfully following a leader, and I agree that Australian leaders need to do better. I am not convinced that Australian attitudes to leadership are entirely derived from our history, but I do believe that this book addresses important issues which need to be discussed and debated more widely.

Remarkable and thought provoking

Having lived and worked in six countries in Europe and Asia prior to coming to Australia, I felt compelled to buy this book following a desire to better understand the Australian psyche.

This is a remarkable book, outstanding in analysis (the four paradoxa perceived among the Australian society) and presentation of possible solutions / a way forward.

Such as the authors', my mind has been analysing how egalitarism can hinder innovation, how local concerns dominate global concerns, and how there appears to be a lack of confidence (reluctance?) to excel at things Australia ought to excel.

Traditional patterns of leadership, such as negotiating decisions within `old boys networks' in larger organisations, thereby excluding talented and experienced staff, contradicts the value of egalitarism (that Australia is proud of) and slows down progress of the economy/society as a whole.

The shadow side of egalitarism, the `tall poppy syndrome', unknown in continental Europe and Asia to the Australian extent and frequency, comes into force when one person happens to (inadvertently) touch upon the self-interests of just one other person, which will then block that former person's career, and diminish enthusiasm, pride and constructive contributions to the social group, political sphere or economy.

Particularly Paradoxon 3 on mateship and competition appears counterproductive to innovation as it diminishes the prospect of Australia placing itself as a leader of ideas, research, concepts and products that could be marketed worldwide. Blessed by a `lucky country' where no real hardship and suffering was experienced, members of the society did and do not always feel a necessary pressure to think, create and succeed both locally and globally.

Australians like to see themselves as `underdogs' instead of `winners'. Australia is the underdog no more; it is suitable to be a leader in the world. As the world and markets change, concepts and traditions will need adjustments to ensure a leading position in this world that will guarantee a prospering economy and society also for future generations.

Tiepoes galoore

I purchased the six volumes of this set for my Kindle even though I have the work in hardback. Winnie is quite a stout fellow even when he's only print on paper, most volumes running around 800 pages. Kindle seemed a great way to make him portable instead of portly. I am on my fourth reading of the collection with one of those being this digital version. The works themselves are a unique insight to WWII at the highest level and I recommend them to anyone with an interest in this subject. My negative review is NOT about the writing or the subject matter. I am appalled at the number of typographical errors in the Kindle versions. In the Third volume there is literally at least one on every page of the first half of the book. Throughout the volumes the last name of the French Admiral Darlan is misspelled. Place names, unit designations, conjunctions, prepositions, nouns and verbs are butchered throughout the works. In addition the maps displayed very poorly on my Kindle. It is a shame that these books have been so shabbily converted to digital format. I repeat these errors are rife throughout all six volumes. If I were unfamiliar with the work there are passages that would be meaningless because of the errors. Don't waste your money on the Kindle version.

Masterul use of english language to tell a great story

As with virtually everything he did in life, Winston Churchill wrote his six volume history of the Second World War with many goals: As the Prime Minister of Britain (and--equally importantly--a member of the "right" class), Churchill had access to volumes of original documents. As the Prime Minister during the War, he was in a unique position to understand the relationship of those documents to real events. As a central actor, he had a huge incentive to prepare the first draft of history...to place himself in the best possible light. As a conservative politician out of power when he wrote, he sought to warn the world of the looming communist menace. Finally, as a long time practitioner of written English, he had an unparalleled command of the language. In this volume, Churchill successfully blends together all of these personas to create an absolutely riveting history of the prelude to the Second World War--from the close of World War One to the invasion of Belgium.
Churchill's mastery of English is reason enough to read this book. For example, in describing the British government's constant debates over what to do about German rearmament, Churchill says the British were "frothing pious platitudes while foeman forge their arms". Very seldom do I have to turn to a dictionary while reading, but Churchill sent me there regularly.
But do not think that this is just a book to be read to enjoy his use of language. His detailed account of how we got into the Second World War, and how we might have avoided it, is incisive and persuasively argued. And always watch for the subtext--his warning that the appeasement on Germany was then (in the 1950's) being repeated in the appeasement of the Soviet Union.
Churchill's weakness flows directly from his strength. As a prime actor, he saw (and describes) the war entirely from the "balance of power", or large political perspective. The plight of the Jews in Germany is barely mentioned. He pays virtually no attention to the internal politics of the U.S.--which ultimately proved decisive in the war. And he virtually ignores the growing war in the far east.
With that limitation in mind, this is a book everyone interested in understanding the Second World War--and everyone who enjoys the creative use of the English language--should read.

A classic, but the Kindle edition is lacking

Sadly, the Kindle Edition of this work fails to do it justice. Churchill has dotted this text with numerous charts and tables illustrating the progress of the war, and every single one of them is completely illegible. The Kindle edition has included them at a shamefully useless resolution, and so I must suggest that any interested reader buy a different edition. I am very disappointed in this purchase.
