Robert Conroy was the author of a run of hugely popular alternate history novels, including Himmler’s War, Rising Sun, 1920: America's Great War, Liberty: 1784, 1864: Custer in Chains, and Germanica for Baen Books. His 1942, which is set within a Japanese conquest of Hawaii, won the prestigious Sidewise Award for alternate histories. Conroy lived for many years in southeastern Michigan.

Decent Alternative History novel

This is an alternate history novel in which the Nazis, at the end of World War Two, actually carry out their plan to set up a "National Redoubt" in the German Alps near the Swiss border. Such plans existed and General Eisenhower feared that the Germans would do this, thereby prolonging the war for some period of time. In this alternate history novel this occurs, and Josef Goebbels leads a ragtag group of German Army divisions, SS units, and slaves to form a rump state which they name "Germanica."

No spoilers here, but the ending is not particularly surprising. What carries this novel is Conroy's excellent writing and decent character development. The plot somewhat meanders, and the basic premise, while interesting, does not really challenge the reader's imagination. I give this one three stars for being a good solid read, but several of Conroy's other novels are better. RJB.

You Can't Hit 'Em Out of the Stadium Every Time

I have long been a fan of Conroy's work, but I didn't start out that way, and in many respects this book calls to mind his earliest efforts. The theme, of course, is the National Redoubt red herring that so distracted the Western Allies, particularly Eisenhower, at the end of World War II. The idea was that the remnants of the Reich's shattered armies would withdraw to the Austrian Alps in an attempt to provide a base for a resurgence of National Socialism through a guerrilla war after all else failed. My problem here is that this work, like Conroy's earliest, seems too cliched, too lacking in nuance to hold my attention. Worse, there are a few weaknesses in editing that reveal themselves along the way. The premise is engaging, but as another reviewer pointed out, the plot is contrived at best with Nazis and heroes straight out of central casting. If you are really interested in alternate history, there is much better material out there, but if you are just getting started in the genre or have a particular fascination with the National Redoubt story, this book will probably hold your attention. For my money, Conroy can do much better. This is simply too juvenile for my tastes.

I did not find myself being pulled into the story like I usually do with one of this authors books

I am a huge fan of Conroy, but this story fell a little flat. I did not find myself being pulled into the story like I usually do with one of this authors books. I cannot give any substantial reasons for finding the book less interesting, it is just that the story was not as intriguing as his stories usually are. I found myself just trying to get through the book so I could finish it. The editing in this book is really bad, that could be a contributing factor. One of the characters starts out in the 106th Infantry at the beginning of the book, then after he escapes from behind enemy lines he joins the 105th. The author confuses these divisions a couple of times during the story, which I find a little distracting. Then there are too many grammatical and even spelling errors in the book. I find myself grading this like I grade an essay in one of my classes. It almost seems the author is bored with alternate history. This has to be my least favorite of his novels, and I own them all. I have reread many of them multiple times, but this is a one read story.

A good start for finding your company's way back to success

Companies increasingly need an adaptive corporate culture, along with acceptance and appreciation of experimentation, to have a competitive advantage, according to Linda Gorchels in this book. Competitive advantages are fleeting, and companies must continue to find new ones in order to experience success over an extended period of time.

The book goes on to provide detailed ideas for business environment analysis, finding and selecting appropriate growth strategies, developing scenarios to cater for multiple alternative future eventualities, use and cultivation of innovation, decision-making practices, leadership methods and techniques, dynamic execution of business strategies, and key features of corporate culture and organizational change.

Much of the material contained in the book reads like a compilation of key ideas from works by other business book authors, and in some parts I would have preferred a more detailed exploration of the issues particularly as they relate to business model renewal. Each chapter ends with a "guest lecturer" appearing by way of written interview, and while I can see that guest lecturers are helpful within a classroom context I felt that some of their contributions tended more to interrupt the flow of the book than to add significant value. There are numerous links to YouTube videos. Once again, I am sure that such videos improve the classroom lecturing experience, but they interrupt the flow of reading the book.

The author has chosen a topic which has considerable importance for most business leaders today. Business as usual is not working as well as it used to, and most businesses seem to be in a decline which cannot be blamed solely on the financial crisis. Permanent strategic change is needed, but it is hard to know where to find it. This book could provide a useful starting point for those seeking the elusive answer, given that it covers a wide field and contains extensive references.

For years the popular business press and mega selling books have focused on the keys to business success, such as: goal setting, strategy, implementation, innovation, leadership and the latest tools and trends. What all we failed to see was that all businesses sit on a business model that predetermines individual and group behaviors much like a culture invisibly determines how its individual members must behave. Business models must be understood and incorporated into management and leadership thinking if we are going to fully and functionally understand where, how and why our companies can succeed, or when our business model needs to be "renewed." It is truly refreshing to read about a component of business success that has been missing in the literature to date.

This is a great idea for a business as well as a new advertising place for business. I had never heard of this and I think some serious money could be me made. The author lays out a complete, easy to follow system.

I like that the book is stuffed with lots of specific tools, resources and information so you can get your business up and running and profitable fast.

This is a very clever and little known business idea.

Pretty good read...

I stumbled across this book and thought to myself why not give it a go? I'm glad I did. Packed with advices!

One suggestion? Alessandro if you are reading this find native English speaker to read and edit your book for you (maybe use MechanicalTurk). I understand English is not your first language, but book is hard to read at some places because grammar is not good.

Other than that I'm glad I bought this gem!

Top Contender for Business Book of the Year

Beverly Behan's Great Companies Deserve Great Boards is probably the most important book on corporate directorship since William G. Bowen's Inside the Boardroom (1994). I encountered this book as a chairman of the board, an experienced public company director and audit chairman -- and I've been recommending it ever since I finished it the first time. On-point, highly readable, contemporary, and above all useful, Behan (a columnist for Bloomberg Businessweek) employs an ebullient didactic style, so rare and welcome in the Sarbanes-Oxley Dodd-Frank era. Here's a field guide to the way corporate directors think, act, and strategize . . . or more correctly, how we should.

Any book recommended by Norm Augustine and Frank McKenna certainly deserves a wide readership, but this one will contend for business book of the year. Behan deals forthrightly with the sometimes-competing expectations of the board and management, audit committee frictions, and the board in M&A decision-making. But her chapter on "Transforming Your Board" is really worth the price of admission, providing real-life methods of ways to "force the conversion."

What a voice of sanity and serious intellectual discourse in our boardrooms and C-suites, delivered in an extraordinary book.

A practical guide to exemplary performance

Why do so many boards just comply with all the rules, get on politely and keep a watchful eye on management without ever leading them anywhere?

Nobody could disagree with the title of this book. Great Companies Deserve Great Boards . The sad fact is, however, that many companies cannot be great because their boards just don’t manage to add that little bit of extra strategic awareness that can make all the difference between a reasonable performance, in line with its peers, or an exemplary one, that far outstrips peers.

This book can help your board to make the jump from good to great. It is full of real life case studies that give positive examples of the actions and activities that will lift the contribution from conformance to performance and into elite board athleticism. My personal favourite is the story of the board of Ford and their deep dive into the process of designing and producing a new car; it involved a visit to the design centre, an overview of the process, education sessions on design, dinner with the designers and a morning at the test tracks driving each car in the new range and experiencing it as the intended purchasers would. Wow! That is a lot of board and management hours but it will enable a lot of creative thinking and allow the board to understand the process they oversee.

The book is full of first hand experiences and the insights from these are easily transferrable across industry sectors and geographic regions. It is like getting ten years’ experience in one easy month of part time reading.

The book is well written, succinctly worded and beautifully edited. The voice of the author is clear, as are the voices of the various protagonists in the case study. This adds an enticing and seductive tone to the work; it is like standing at a cocktail party on the outskirts of a group that is vigorously a topic of interest – you just can’t help but be drawn in!

As I am fond of quoting ‘A mind expanded by an original thought will never regain its original dimensions’. A mind after reading this book will never be satisfied with anything but a valuable board. This book should be mandatory for all boards and their advisers.

This book is fantastic! It is written so succinctly and with a bit of wry humor at times. The descriptions of the mountain inhabitants of Sicily are spot on! I highly recommend this book to all WW11 aficionados! I can't put it down!

Outstandingly honest

Outstanding and emotionally wrenching memoir of the Sicilian and early part of the Italian campaigns. The book start off with hijinks and comedy, but progressively descends into despair and terror. Highly recommended.

A Horrors of Being Part of a Sideshow in Italy

In late 1943, the western allies attack the so-called "soft-underbelly of Europe" and worked their way up from Sicily through the boot of Italy. Horrendous battles ensued with names writ large in history, Salerno, Cassino, Anzio are a few that are evoked.
On the extreme right hand side of the Allied Line, at a coastal village called Ortona, a personal contest of wills was under way between the German Parachute Regiment of battle-hardened soldiers who has seen tours of duty on the Russian Front, against Canadians from dispirate backgrounds with little combat experience.
In the month-long battle that followed nearly 2000 Canadian soldiers were killed to capture a small village. Farley Mowat was a young officer in one of the Canadian regiments, the Hastings Prince Edward Regiment "Hastie-Pees." After a landing at Sicily and fighting their way up this far in Italy what to come at Ortona made all that came before pale in comparison.
Mowat, a writer known for his wit shows that even during the dark, wet, winter months he was able to find things that give him joy in the charnel house of Ortona. He describes the pressure on an officer just before and attack goes in, the corssing of the Moro River, and, in one of the most amazing tales of battlefield desperation, describes his charge against a German tank with fixed bayonets.
As the battle drew on streets in the town changed sides frequently with the focus of the battle being a particular house in a particular street. Ortona earned the name of "little Stalingrad" for those who faught there and Mowat describes the drama day by day as the battle winds on and the Germans are forced out leaving the legacy of 1600 Canadian corpses buried in the British Commonwealth Moro River Cemetary.
It is a changing experience for Mowat and one wonders how he retained his wit and verve to produce the wonderful naturalist novels that he later became famous for.
This is lyrical poetic auto-biography of an intelligent, well-educated young man coming to terms with the horrors of war. As such Mowat is very much like Robert Graves in "Goodbye to all That" --- smart enough to be troubled by the nature of war yet too young to come to terms with all that it entails. Perhaps that is why Mowat waited over 40 years before he wrote the book in the first place.

Jean Cardinal Danielou, one of the foremost Catholic scholars of the twentieth century, and a theologian especially concerned with the relationship between history and the Christian revelation, examines in this book the typological interpretation of the Fathers of the Church and their contemporaries during the first three centuries of the Christian era. Among examples he discusses are the crossing of the Jordan by the Israelites as a type of baptism, Rahab as a type of the Church, and the fall of Jericho as a figure of the end of the world. The complex interpretations of Adam, the flood, and the sacrifice and marriage of Isaac are also described in full and commented on. The work is divided into five books entitled "Adam in Paradise," "Noah and the Flood," "The Sacrifice of Isaac," "Moses and the Exodus," and "The Cycle of Joshua". Each book is divided into chapters discussing the various types and the interpretations of Irenaeus, Clement, Gregory of Nyssa and their contemporaries, including Philo.

Fascinating in some chapters, dull in others

Danielou's examination of how the early church fathers interpreted the Old Testament is a book of uneven quality in my opinion. I waffled on whether to give the book 3 or 4 stars, so 3.5 is probably what it deserves. The book lays out in detail several examples of Old Testament typology, focusing on the first 6 books of the Bible, Genesis through Joshua. Typology is essentially the study of how Old Testament people, places, themes, and events foreshadow or outline New Testament realities in a prophetic or 'typical' way. For example the crossing of the Red Sea by the Israelites is a type of the future reality of Baptism, whereby Christians are washed clean from their slavery to sin (cf. slavery in Egypt). The actual content and interpretations in typology that Danielou provides is quite good. I especially enjoyed the section on Rahab as a type of the Church, and the comparision of Adam and Christ. The parts of the book that really dragged, and were uninteresting was Danielou's rather wordy descriptions of what the church father's meant, and the sections that dealt with allegories. It was helpful, however, that Danielou spent some time distinguishing allegory (which he rejects) and the hermeneutics of typology. But, he did this multiple times, and the example of the allegory of the ark should have been enough to get his point across. Overall I enjoyed the insight that came from quoting his sources, but I didn't find Danielou's commentary very interesting. Some chapters on allegory in particular are worth skipping altogether.

Biblical typology is almost a lost art to many Christians who are unfamiliar with the writings of the early Church Fathers or the great Saints of the Middle Ages, all of whom were steeped in the mystical tradition. It was critical to the early Church Fathers to demonstrate the fulfillment of the prophecies about the Messiah which fill the Old Testament and to show how the "types" of the Old Testament are fulfilled in the sacraments given to the Church by Christ. Some examples are the Mystagogical Lectures of St. Cyril of Jerusalem or De Mysteriis and De Sacramentis by St. Ambrose. It is also important to recognize that understanding the liturgy more fully is not possible without understanding the biblical typology upon which it rests.

Origen and the Alexandrian School of Scriptural interpretation especially brought out the spiritual richness of the developing tradition, which goes back to the Jewish scholar Philo. However, even the more literally focused Antioch School spoke of types, though their interpretation differed. For example, the Antiochian school saw the water from the rock in the desert as a type of Eucharist (which comes from the Pauline tradition), while the Alexandrian school saw it as a type of Baptism (from the Johannine tradition). Yet as Danielou notes "we meet an agreement of all schools upon the fundamental types." Thus, he can conclude, "This proves that we are face to face with something which is part and parcel of the deposit of Revelation."

The chapters tell the story of the richness of the biblical typology presented, which only skims the surface of all that the Scriptures hold: Book I: Adam and Paradise; Book II: Noah and the Flood; Book III: The Sacrifice of Isaac; Book IV: Moses and the Exodus; Book V: The Cycle of Joshua. Cardinal Danielou does not have time to explore the history of the origins of typological exegesis but what he gives us is rich fare indeed. This receives my highest recommendation for those seeking to deepen their faith in Jesus Christ.

Essential Reading for Medievalists

Jean Daniélou, a Jesuit priest made Cardinal by Paul VI, was a theologian and one if the architects of Vatican II. He was also the author of works on the history of patristic theology and exegesis and the liturgy, which earned him fauteuil 32 in the Académie Française. His book on biblical typology, Sacramentum futuri; études sur les origines de la typologie biblique (Paris: Beauchesne, 1950) was translated into English in 1960 by a fellow Jesuit, Wulstan Hibberd, under the title From Shadows to Reality. This study remains to this day at the top of the list of must-read works on the subject, along with Henri de Lubac"s Exégèse médievale: Les Quatre Sens de l'Écriture and La théologie au douzieme siecle, (Paris, Vrin 1957) by M.D. Chenu. Possessed of an encyclopedic knowledge of patristics, Daniélou condenses thousands of pages early Christian exegetical texts, which range from the brilliant to the banal, into a short, concise survey useful to scholars and yet accessible to the (educated) general reader. The sections on allegory are important as they bring out the rhetorical dimension of the typological figura and allow one to see how typology was not just a collection of Old and New Testament parallels, but a full-blown epistemology that permeated all aspects of medieval writing on almost any subject. As such, From Shadows to Reality is essential reading for all medievalists.

Apart from their real merits, Daniélou's book, along with those of Lubac and Chenu, are still essential reading on the subject of biblical typology because no major works on the subject have been published since the 1950s. The price of a reprint of the 1960 translation ($200) is not going to gain Daniélou's book many new admirers.

Of related interest is Philippe Buc's L'Ambiguite du Livre: Prince, pouvoir, et peuple dans les commentaires de la Bible au Moyen Age (Paris, 1994), which examines with the social, political and ideological dimensions of the medieval biblical commentaries and glosses.
