Contract To True Love

Oh god. I got all weepy and sniffly reading this story. Then I got pissed and swore and had to kick my kids out of my room so they don't go around repeating what I said. I'm totally all for stories that tug at my heart and make me feel for the characters, but, damn it, I should be able to read more than a dozen or pages without being on one end or the other of the emotional spectrum, right?

But that's what makes Ms. Charles' stories some of my favorites. They're engaging, humorous, and realistic. Those three elements coupled with incredible characters is what pulls me into her stories and keeps me there.

Rick and Lexie deserved to be together but couldn't for a reason initially unknown to Lexie. Once the truth was told, their relationship was on the Bullet Train to happily ever after. Well, not really. Their relationship had to be kept under wraps, and they snuck around to steal moments together to ensure that no one they were seeing one another. Of course, everything that's in darkness will eventually be brought to light. While they did damage control to keep their secret safe, Rick came across new information that devastated him and almost ruined what he and Lexie had.

I don't think "suspense" or "mystery" when I think of Ms. Charles' books. She is clearly a romance author who writes in the contemporary genre, and her stories are always about couples finding their way into the arms of their beloved. The suspense and bit of mystery she added to this story was a really nice surprise. It was one of those "Just when you thought it couldn't get any better!" moments.

Ms. Charles continues to surprise me with the stories she tells and how she tells them. Everyone deserves a happy ending. Lucas and Jade got theirs first, Rick and Lexie second. Carter's next and I wonder what adventure he'll go on to get his.

This was another one of Miranda's books that I could not put down. I hate when the world interrupts and I can't sit and read. This is my second book by Miranda Charles and I am even more impressed than "The Unwilling Executive", her first book in the Captured By Love series. This book can be read alone without reading "The Unwilling Executive" but it would help to understand the characters.

Lexie Mead has had a crush on Rick Donnelly for a LONG time. She can't figure out why Rick never acts on her flirting. SHe has tried every trick in the book and he never makes a move. So she decided to give up. What she doesn't know is why he can't make a move. It's not because he doesn't want to, he can't. for good reason too.

Rick is in charge of his step-sister's inheritance. His step-mother almost lost it in her reckless spending spree. Thankfully Rick too it over and has made sure his sister will have something left when she comes of age. This is not an easy task though. It comes with strings attached that affects Rick's happiness.

The story continues with Rick's struggle to keep his agreements for his sister's sake and find some sort of relief for his own sexual desires. He truly struggles with his feelings for a woman and doing the right thing.

I loved this story mostly for the characters that I hated, loved, then hated and then loved again. The characters were so well written. The story had twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat, thinking I had the ending of the story all figured out. Wrong. I was so wrong. I loved how it ended though. Surprised doesn't even describe it. I love Miranda's imagination and change in the story.

Like I said, I loved "The Unwilling Executive" and loved this one just as much, maybe more. I really like reading about Lucas and Jade again and having them apart of this story. So nice when the characters come back to visit or be a part of the next story.

Another well done book by Miranda P. Charles. Loved it! I am ready for "The Undercover Playboy" and the surprises it brings too.

I was given this book for an honest review. I loved the story. This is the second book in the Captured by Love series and is Rick and Lexie's story. Rick is the cousin of the Carmichael brothers we met in the Time for Love series. He has been a player in the past as all his friends seem to be. He has known Lexie for over a year. Lexie is best friends with Jade who is married to Lucas. Lucas is part owner of the company Lexie and Jade work for. Rick is good friends with Lucas so they all go to the same functions.

Rick has a step sister, Shelly, who he loves very much. Rick and Shelly's farther is dead and Rick is in charge of Lexie's trust fund. Rick and Lexie's mother, Betty, had a big blow out as Betty used to be in charge of the trust fund. Rick found out Betty was taking large amounts of money from Lexie's trust fund, so he had a contract with Betty to take over the trust fund. Unfortunately in the contract he could not marry until Lexie turned 21 which was in six years. Lexie has been flirting with Rick for a year now trying to get his attention. She would like to take it further than just friends. As far as Lexie is concerned, Rick only sees her as a friend. Little does Lexie know that Rick is having a hard time keeping his hands off her. He knows he keeps hurting her by not responding to her advances. He finally tells her why he can't be with her. They then start to see each other secretly. There are other things going on that interfere with Rick and Lexie seeing much of each other.

I loved how different this book was since that Rick didn't feel he could have a future with Lexie because of the contract. There was also mystery and police work involved in this book which I love. I enjoyed seeing how the characters developed and changed through the book. I can't wait until the next book comes out!

The Horrors of Addiction

Thomas De Quincey wrote this account of his life and his struggle with drug addiction to both educate on the evils of opium and also to share the dream trances that he experienced while in the throes of addiction. This version by Penguin presents De Quincey's original version from 1821 and then his revision notes from 1856. There is also a short section of comments that De Quincey made concerning his Confessions from 1821-1855. The introduction by Alethea Hayter is one of the best I've seen in a Penguin book, and it really helps in understanding Thomas De Quincey and his writing style.
The Confessions, in a nutshell, begin by recounting De Quincey's early life and the events that led him to begin taking opium. The rest of the tale deals with his problems with opium and his dreams that came from taking the drug. The original version isn't that long of a read, but his revision notes add considerable length, and for the most part weren't as interesting as the 1821 original.
De Quincey's prose is absolutely amazing. He is one of the most gifted writers I've had the pleasure to read (up to this date). Many times I felt as though I was lifted up by his words and carried directly into his world. I've yet to have as profound an experience with any other author. De Quincey can also be difficult. His grasp of the English language will leave many modern readers scratching their heads. Footnotes and notes by the editor help, but a dictionary will find heavy use during the reading of this book. So those with short attention spans, be forewarned. You won't survive this book. Also, De Quincey received a classical education. He makes heavy use of Greek names, places and other classical references. He even uses Greek words in the text (although notes provide translations). I can read Greek and have studied classical history, so I got most of his references and in jokes. This is one of the things that impressed me about De Quincey. He mentioned early on that he could speak classical Greek fluently. Anyone who has studied Greek realizes how difficult this is to do. Even Romans had trouble speaking Greek fluently, so much so that it is mentioned in various historical works when an emperor could do so. The fact that De Quincey can do this is a sign of his deep intellectual abilities. I can only imagine how prolific he might have been if he had not been saddled with an opiate addiction.
An amazing book and one I highly recommend to those who are prepared to read and understand it. For those looking for a justification for drug use, look elsewhere!

Not the best edition

De Quincey's writings on opium addiction are both fascinating and intensely frustrating. As other reviewers have noted, he has an amazing ability to capture the surreality of his experiences on the drug. However, the reader should be aware that De Quincey spends the majority of his space on other subjects: his childhood, his numerous neuroses, obscure points about Greek literature, etc occupy 3/4 of the narrative, while the bits about opium are interspersed throughout but concentrated heavily toward the end. If you don't enjoy his writing, this makes for a long slog through uninteresting content.

For me, at least, his writing style is aggravating in the extreme. De Quincey is self-indulgent and impressed by his own intellect, which he tries to demonstrate to the reader at every opportunity. His prose is florid even by Victorian standards. The over-intellectualism is useful, though, in keeping his opium narratives analytically clear so that readers who've never tried it can immerse themselves in the experience. I've never found anything quite like this book in tone, and for this reason would recommend it to anyone curious about opium or the psychology of drug addiction.

Regardless of your interests in the book, I strongly recommend purchasing a different edition than the Dover Thrift. De Quincey wrote a second, later essay on his opium experience called Suspiria de Profundis that is included in many other copies of Confessions (but not this one). The latter work is an important supplement and addendum to the material contained in the first essay, focusing much more heavily on his opium dreams (and is, in my opinion, actually superior in psychological insight and interest value). You will not get the full picture of De Quincey's struggles without reading it.

For Verbiage Junkies Only

Thomas De Quincey was a contemporary of Wordsworth and more importantly in terms of comparison, Coleridge. He writes that Coleridge and he met several times and in one instance they perused some Parnesi prints together. Whether on not they were both high at the time, De Quincey doesn't reveal. However, given the tenor of the tangent upon which De Quincey expounds, it is certain that at least he was using, and given Coleridge's history, he probably was a well. Why do I cite this incident? Because it is one of the few points in the narrative that is memorable. As someone interested in literary figures, the image of two 19th century literary hop-heads grooving-out whilst staring at Parnesi prints (you should look up Parnesi on the web - a definite precursor to M.C. Escher)is just plain marvelous.
Unfortunately, that, and a few paragraphs depicting some truly macabre nightmares are the only noteworthy incidents in this book. Too often, De Quicey's labarynthine riffs doen't really lead anywhere. His writing style in some ways can be compared to another of his more illustrious contemporaries, Thomas Carlyle's. Both go in for elongated Latinate constructions, with modifier upon modifier and dependent and independent clauses ad infinitum. Carlyle, however, can pull it off. His great wit and energy of mind holds the center of the thought together, even as the rest of his sentence veers off into Baroque space. De Quincey is not an adept enough magician to perform this trick.

De Quincey's subject is himself. His mode of writing in this instance is primarily that of a diarist. This leads to comparisons with some other English diarists of note. Two that come immediately to mind are Defoe (A Journal of the Plague Year) and Pepys (the most famous of all). De Quincey doesn't hold up well in comparision. Defoe's journal is interesting because his subject matter is compelling, he's a great journalist (conveying to our mind's eye the events he depicts), and he gets to the point. Pepys is wonderful because he provides us a full panorama of life in London in the latter half of the 17th century. De Quincey is so absorbed in his solipsistic self-examination, that we as readers aren't even allowed to come up for air, much less see anything around us. That would even be permissable if the narrator were like Proust's Swann, who is at least likeable and self-effacing. Not so De Quincey. He interupts his own narrative on countless occasions to tell us what a splendid scholar he is and (to borrow a phrase from Ophelia) "what a great mind is here o'erthrown." He peppers the text with words like "heautontimoroumenos" to indicate that he is learned in Greek. Throughout the narrative, he is in way to big a hurry to impress these points upon the reader, instead of allowing the reader to judge for him/herself.
If you want to know what it's like to be a junkie, read Burroughs. If you want to read some painfully constructed English prose, give this one a go.

Both a great introduction and good overview

Who knows what the bad reviewers were looking for to give such disturbing reviews. For me, I align with independent researchers who passionately pursue their subject matter and honestly detail their understanding and insights.

I like how Derrick stretches understanding and makes natural comparisons across fields of study... such as doubling of octaves being related to doubling of cells as zygote develops into a human fetus. I dig the brainwave connection. I dig the connection of beats and rhythm into audible tones and notes and much further up of 40 octaves into the light spectrum. I do see this as a natural and connected progression.

His section on A=440Hz tuning is quite insightful, that corresponding notes often result in irrational numbers that go onto infinity and fail to have good harmonics.

"This is quite interesting because all of the 'sacred' numbers from those ancient cultures seem to have this property of numerical 'roundness', this is in fact how I discovered them, through pure need, and not through a specific search for 'cosmic' numbers."

Derrick's discussion and connection of BPM to Frequency is one of the best parts of this book and makes it worth the purchase.

I also really enjoy his discussion of Pythagorean error, which has troubled me, and his solution of irrational numbers compounding is simple and brilliant. His offered solution is one to consider.

"If it is all about ratios, then it would seem obvious that using only ratios to get all the notes for your scale might work better. Then you can try to find ratios using the lowest possible numbers for all of them, not just the first 4. These ratios should preferably be as close as possible to those in the harmonic series, using the same small numbers like 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 and trying to go no higher than 16, or where the harmonics get too close together to make musical sense.

There are actually people doing this already, they call it 'just intonation'. It is the art of making a scale with the lowest most whole numbered ratios that you can, while still getting a scale that sounds good for use in music. Small ratios automatically send you in the same direction as the harmonic series because the harmonic series is based on the same whole number divisions. This is the path of least resistance in physics and also the path of least confusion and decimal places in mathematics, which is good because it makes all the calculations so much easier."

I do enjoy how he shares his discovery that the 7 tones match the 7 colors when doubling the frequencies.

"The vertical column marked 'brainwave frequencies' covers the first 7 octaves of brainwave frequencies and the column marked 'audio frequencies' covers the next 7 octaves of audio above that one. I put the octaves side by side and calculated frequencies that are octaves of each chakra frequency and that also all fall into 14 successive octaves covering the full range of known audio, all the way from the slowest beats right up to the highest tones, all in harmony with itself. Basically it is just a Ptolemy scale but with each successive note in the next new octave."

For my critique and constructive criticism, I take caution with the simplistic color spectrum and I'd love if he connected with Goethe's work, which explores natural color creation and prismatic colors found with light as well as from dark and finally combining light and dark. Here's a Free Google Books scan of his book: [...] and there are videos online which give a good overview. I encourage Derrick to apply his musical understanding to Goethe's understanding of light, dark, and color. There may be a much better connection to explore.

Derrick continues to go through examples and detailed connection between sacred geometry and tones and music of the spheres and the tremendous amount of numerical significance giving enough ground to certainly consider re-tuning one's instruments to try more harmonious productions.

This is why this book is a good introduction and overview. I can share that I'm stoked to try out different tunings in my composition and feel that my singing, and choral arrangements for other singers will give welcomed relief. Our ears naturally gravitate to clear and clean harmonies.

I'm a big fan of the three sonic realms shared by Bernie Krause in his Ted Talk on the voice of the natural world [...] he shares that there is geophony, biophony and anthrophony.

"The soundscape is made up of three basic sources. The first is the geophony, or the nonbiological sounds that occur in any given habitat, like wind in the trees, water in a stream, waves at the ocean shore, movement of the Earth. The second of these is the biophony. The biophony is all of the sound that's generated by organisms in a given habitat at one time and in one place. And the third is all of the sound that we humans generate that's called anthrophony. Some of it is controlled, like music or theater, but most of it is chaotic and incoherent, which some of us refer to as noise."

Having this book is like a guide on how to produce music to be in tune and in harmony with our biophony, and our geophony. Derrick and I have similar conclusions and his book is a welcome treatise on this forward thinking and progressive subject.

Nothing short of MAGIC! An essential read for the conscious musician and/or energy alchemist!

I was recommended this book by a music producer that I have great respect for and after just reading the table of contents I knew it would become my new music bible. With chapters titles like "Just Innotation, the Color Spectrum, Chakras and Astrology" and "Music of the Spheres, Cosmic Connections" I knew right away that this wasn't your everyday music production read. This book is easy to read, and easy to understand after some study but will shape your perspective of music production to shine light on the fact that music made with intent and in harmony with the knowledge of sacred frequencies is the next logical and spiritual progression for the aspiring music producer. Great information is available here for the electronic producer and even just for the music fanatic. A must read in my opinion! The author, Derrick, is a down to earth guy that even stays in contact through his facebook and his facebook groups like "Life, the Universe and 432 Hz". Don't pass this important sacred knowledge up! 5 out of 5 stars!

A guide to shopping for Asian vegetables (which often appear under many different names), this book also helps browsers figure out what to do with them once they're sitting on the counter. Deseran, food editor of the house organ Williams-Sonoma Taste, organizes her recipes according to the types of produce they require: leafy greens (Steamed Halibut with Sweet Miso Wrapped in Cabbage), roots (Crisp Taro Pancakes with Hoisin-Lime Dipping Sauce), squashes (Stir-Fried Luffa Squash with Diced Shrimp and Garlic), beans and other miscellaneous vegetables (Sukhi Singh's Bharta), and herbs and aromatics (Grilled Lemongrass-Tamarind Pork Chops with Chayote Slaw). For each vegetable, she covers alternate names, varieties, uses and storage for example, the many varieties of bok choy, or Chinese white cabbage, are described, along with such recipes as Braised Short Ribs with Hearts of Bok Choy, and Bok Choy, Water Chestnut, and Bacon Chow Mein. Deseran's tone is light (long beans look "like a vegetable out of a Dr. Seuss book"), and she can be charming even in defeat, as when admitting her failure to interest her husband in bitter melon. Richard Jung's color photographs are clear and appetizing, and make identifying the vegetables that much easier. Deseran's book is a handy, practical companion to a shopping trip to Chinatown, and her recipes are terrific. (June 1)Forecast: This attractive paperback will do particularly well in urban areas where a diverse selection of vegetables is more common. Although it may be less comprehensive than the recent The Asian Grocery Store Demystified, it has more recipes and a better layout.

An Average Book, not up to Standards on the Subject

`Asian Vegetables' by first time author, Sara Deseran is a lightweight entry into the world of books about Asian cooking. While there may not be as many heavyweight classics as there are in English for Italian, French, or Mediterranean cuisines, there are important classics against which one's efforts must be measured. The heavyweight in the area of guides to Asian ingredients is `Bruce Cost's Asian Ingredients', updated in 2000.

For starters, for roughly the same list price in paperback, Cost's classic has twice as many pages, covers all ingredients, not just vegetables, and presents vegetables and all other products in a greater depth than Ms. Deseran's book. For starters, Deseran does not include the Latin scientific names for her vegetables, which is doubly annoying as she herself says, most of the vegetables have different names, even in different parts of China, let alone different names in Japan and Thailand. So, the only way to be sure we are talking about the same thing is to give the one name that is guaranteed to be the same across all books.

Ms. Deseran has one opportunity to gain a march on Cost's book by providing color photographs of almost all of the plants she discusses, but this feature is, to my mind, done poorly. In an attempt to compare and contrast the appearance of related vegetables, the photographs are all `family pictures'. Thus, for example, one picture of four oriental members of the cabbage family is so small that I am very hard pressed to see the differences between the four vegetables in the photograph, and I am hard pressed to see the difference between choy sum (Chinese flowering cabbage) and the Mediterranean veggie, broccoli Rabe (rapini). This brings up another weakness with the book.

One of the main features of the book is the recipes presented for each featured ingredient. One problem with these recipes is that relatively few of these ingredients are available outside of an Oriental market in a large city such as New York or San Francisco. My local very well stocked megamart probably carries less than a third of the ingredients in this book. One of the virtues of Bruce Cost's book is that since it covers all types of Asian products, including meat, fish, noodles, sauces, and grains, the average coverage is probably better than half, as grains, noodles, and fish are much more common than many vegetables. So, even though Ms. Deseran says that most oriental leafy greens are almost entirely interchangeable with one another, this doesn't help if you can't find any. It would have made the recipes much more useful if the author had provided substitutions, especially for the leafy green vegetables and the squashes.

Even on the subjects on which both Deseran and Cost have articles, Cost's information is deeper and generally more useful. While Deseran has articles on `Ginger' and `Galangal and Turmeric', Cost has several pages on the `Ginger family', including individual articles on `Ginger', `Galangal', `Turmeric', `Mioga Ginger', and `Lesser Galangal'. For the ginger family, both books provide two soup recipes featuring ginger and Galangal. Deseran gives the usual short paragraph to ginger, while Cost gives two pages to ginger, including a discussion of `baby ginger' and ginger shoots. Cost also covers dried and powdered preparations made from ginger and turmeric, which are beyond the scope of Deseran's book. Deseran does cover a fairly sizable number of non-vegetable topics in her `pantry glossary', but most entries offer little substantial information. For example, there is a paragraph on chicken broth, which gives no recipe for same, and makes no mention, like Cost, that the Asian chicken broth is an entirely different preparation than it's French or Italian cousins. She simply suggests you use a commercial western style organic chicken broth. This point alone makes me question the depth to which Ms. Deseran has seriously researched her subject.

Oddly, Ms. Deseran's bibliography is very respectable and includes `Bruce Cost's Asian Ingredients'. It almost seems she knows of this important work, but has never read it. Ms. Deseran's patron and inspiration for this book is noted Chinese cookbook author, Barbara Tropp, whose `The Modern Art of Chinese Cooking' has all the cachet and quality of a Chinese `Mastering the Art of French Cooking' by Julia Child. And, Ms. Tropp agrees with Mr. Cost in clearly distinguishing Chinese from French broth by leaving out the vegetables and adding ginger. So much for packaged supermarket stocks!

One attraction found in Ms. Deseran's book is the anecdotes by noted chefs on Oriental ingredients. I found these contributed virtually nothing to the value of the book.

Virtually the only situation in which it seems Ms. Deseran's book may have an edge over Bruce Cost's work is if you happen to live near a first class Asian market which stocks a good variety of fresh ingredients and the color pictures can serve as an aid in identifying the products. But then, Cost's book becomes more valuable, as it offers an excellent guide to how to make the best of Asian markets, something Ms. Deseran does not cover, except to note how to care for the vegetables once you have them.

This is really an average book, so my three stars simply reflects that this book offers virtually nothing when compared to the standard works on the subject.

A poor man's "Amaranth to Zucchini"

This is a good guide to the produce you'll find in an Asian market, and it gives you a decent idea of what you can do with that bitter melon or mustard cabbage after you've brought it home. It's a good book -- but I can't work up my enthusiasm for it.

For one thing: even though the photography is attractive, it's not terribly useful. Presumably to both save money and to give a sense of size-and-scale, most of the vegetable photos have several items in the same picture (Chinese broccoli next to choy sum next to mustard cabbage), with little circles (TOO-little circles) indicating the item highlighted in the text. The veggie photos are also smaller than the recipe photos; personally, I'd rather a good hard look at a healthy bunch of greens than a full-page picture of Asian gumbo with mustard cabbage and chinese sausage (however appealing that recipe might be).

The information given is also... well, not quite minimal, but far from exhaustive. While the entry for Lotus root in Vegetables from Amaranth to Zucchini is two or three pages (plus recipes), there's really only 3 paragraphs devoted to it here. It's good information, mind you, just not that much of it.

But note that I do give the book 4 stars. If you're completely new to Asian cooking, then this inexpensive book may be helpful (and a fatter book would be overwhelming).

A little too limited in category

This book would've ordinarily been a very good book, however, with a few of the same kinds of books available at the same time, I believe that you should shop around before purchasing this one. I have looked at several with the same theme and have found that "Asian Greens" is more concise and lists 3x more vegetables than this book and offers 30 more recipes than this book. Yes the pictures are very beautiful but so are the ones in "Asian Greens". For an informative guide, I would have to go with "Asian Greens" -- unfortunately, I picked up this one first and have since bought "Asian Greens" to help me pick Asian vegetables at the markets.

About the Author

Giampietro Gobo, Ph.D., is Professor of Methodology of Social Research and Evaluation Methods at the Department of Social and Political Studies - University of Milan. He has published over fifty articles in the areas of qualitative and quantitative methods. His books include Doing Ethnography (Sage 2008) and Qualitative Research Practice (Sage 2004, co-edited with C. Seale, J.F. Gubrium and D. Silverman). He is currently engaged in projects in the area of workplace studies.
