What A Delightful Book- Been Designing for Years, But Good For Beginner's Too

I know that the title of this review might be off putting to some who would view this book, but let me explain. When I first began to sew and design clothing, I wanted to do it right. I didn't care about the shortcuts or the quickie solutions to just slipping by with creating clothing. I wanted to make high quality designer level fashions eventually. With this in mind, all of my sewing pursuits were based upon building one concept upon another and getting each one right as I went along until I learned a new one.

With this in mind, I recommend this for veteran sewers as well as beginners who want to learn how to do things right from the beginning. Yes it will take more time at first, but in the end, you will be glad you took the time to learn it correctly. HOWEVER IT IS NOT A HOW TO SEW BOOK. You will need other resources to compliment this one for basic sewing information.

WHAT IS THIS BOOK LIKE?
Author David Page Coffin breaks down the shirt types in terms of modular thinking. Each style has a particular look to the basic form of the shirt, which he calls blocks. Then there are sub blocks which mean that specific design shapes of shoulders, armscye, and center front and neckline, for example. The garment industry uses these blocks as generalized means of making a shirt to fit a wide variety of people. This book attempts to show you how to make your OWN PERSONAL block to fit YOU. These blocks are used to spin off of to make any type of shirt that you desire- adding details and interesting changes which reflect your personality.

This book has a large variety of photos of processes for things such as collars, plackets, cuffs, and anything that would apply to shirts. There are sections on specific styles of shirts with featured details laid out in progression. There are also designers featured in the book with examples of what they have done with shirts.

There are a lot of resources listed in the book, such as other books with good designing information in them so that you can build your own library of sewing reference- something that I have always found invaluable for my own sewing and designing pursuits.

He gives examples of each type of shirt block (think style here) and then places you can find these types of styles in patterns, books, and online.

The pages of the book are thick and durable (think good text book weight) and easy to read. The binding is not spiral and won't lay flat easily on a table unless weighted down.

HOW WOULD THIS CONTRIBUTE TO AN EXPERIENCED SEWER?
This book is an invaluable resource for any experienced sewer who wants to make high quality and good looking shirts that equal or excel beyond what is found in the general marketplace. The photos are well laid out, and the many tips in here offered will apply to many different types of patterns that you might develop or encounter. You can design your own shirts, or just use the many tips in the book to make excellent patterns from that are commercial patterns.

HOW WOULD THIS BOOK HELP A NOVICE SEWER?
This book might have some parts which are overwhelming for a novice sewer such as how to copy an existing shirt or perhaps designing, but if you are highly motivated as I was, it might be right up your alley. If you tend to be a bit more hesitant to try going out on your own, I would say that this book has enough in it to help you do one good thing for every pattern you try to sew. You can use a tip or two for your patterns and incorporate them into your daily sewing over time. When you are ready to do more, this book will provide it for you.

THE BOTTOM LINE
If you have ever wanted to make nice shirts of any kind, this book is an excellent resource to have. The information contained in the book is invaluable for improving sewing technique and making high quality durable clothing that looks designer. Even novices can use many tips in here until they find their grounding in the sewing world. Experienced sewers will find plenty in this book to keep them busy improving and learning and challenged. The designer cameos are very inspirational and encourage me to want to branch out into designing new things. All in all, although I wish it were spiral bound or bound so it stays open better, and the lay out of the book was a little less jumbled, this book is a huge winner! I highly recommend it to anyone who truly wants to sew and do it well.

This book will have a center place in my library for years to come. It is a jewel- not always easy to find these days. FIVE HUGE STARS !

No promised collar, cuff or placket patterns in book, only 20 (not more than 100) online

Please note that I increased the number of stars from one to two based eon the author's statement that all links now work. I will go through the book and check online and revise my review further a bit later. One of the problems is that a second book and an assortment of web documents are all necessary to make sense of it, and they are not welI integrated. It should not require a juggling act to read it -- two books and a laptop.

I fully expected to adore this book, since I consider the original shirtmaking book (Shirtmaking: Developing Skills For Fine Sewing) one of the best sewing books ever written. I consider DPC to have had more influence on me than any other figure in sewing. I have been drafting my own patterns for decades, and the statement on the back cover ("Full-Size Patterns and Construction Steps for Practically Every Detail Imaginable!") sealed the deal for me, although it is a complete fiction. The promise on the front cover (More than 100 pattern downloads for collars, cuffs & plackets") is a complete lie, too. They may intend to do something in the future, but I would recommend waiting until they do, since by then quite a few people will have given up and resold their copies on Amazon.

There are no patterns in the book. Online, there are exactly 15 hyperlinks in the guide (five pointing to nothing), and most of them are worthless. There are seven nearly identical dress shirt collar patterns, an equestrian collar pattern, and 12 extremely similar detachable collar patterns, which I find astonishing. Thus, you get 20 collar pattern representing only two collar types, and zero plackets, zero cuffs, zero details. Of the aforementioned 15 links, 5 pointed to nothing, one just repeated pages in the book, one had basic instructions for a camp shirt collar (but no pattern), one just showed pictures of store-bought shirts in the author's collection, and one had ideas (but no patterns) for a single pocket and cuff (and if you need to be shown how to do a cuff that basic, then this book is too advanced for you). Just six had any patterns, and the range of those patterns went from A almost to B, but not quite. That is a far cry from what the cover promises.

A new sewing classic

I would give this book 10 stars if I could. I preordered in December thinking I might pick up a few tips to transfer to women's blouses. When I received the book today I realized that I can spend years working my way through all the wonderful ideas and techniques. Not only is the book great, there is on-line access to patterns and tons of additional material. This is a "must have" for every sewing library.

About the Author
John Gordon Davis was born in Southern Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, and educated in South Africa. He earned a BA in Political Science, paying his way through university by working as a deckhand on British merchant ships and on the Dutch whaling fleet at the Antarctic. He went on to take an LL.B. degree whilst serving as a judge´s clerk in Rhodesia. Called to the Bar, he was appointed an assistant public prosecutor in the Magistrate´s Courts during the troubled years leading up to Rhodesia´s Unilateral Declaration of Independence, before becoming Crown Counsel in the Attorney General´s Chambers. He was later appointed to the same position in Hong Kong. He quit this post to become a full-time writer when his first book, “Hold My Hand I´m Dying” became an instant best-seller. Other bestselling novels followed. A veteran seaman; he and his Australian born wife, Rosemary, sailed round most of the world in a succession of yachts. Upon retirement, they travelled widely and from their home in a lovely old Spanish farmhouse in Andalucia, Spain, he also ran highly successful writing courses for both aspiring and published authors. John Gordon Davis sadly died in 2014 leaving behind a rich literary heritage, including several unpublished novels he had worked on even as he supposedly slowed the pace.

Read it and weep!

This is perhaps my most favorite book. It deals with life in Southern Rhodesia before and after independence from Britain. It's a very accurate, albeit fictional, account of the lifestyles of the 'white africans'. This is also a passionate and moving love story set in the turbulence of those unsettled times. I feel the author has accurately portrayed the ambivalence of white settlers in Africa - benevolent autocracy yet patronising towards the blacks and their aspirations. If I were to write a book, I hope I could convey the emotions of this book. Given the instabilty of the current black government in Zimbabwe and their attitude towards aids, civil rule of law, the author could quite easily say" I told you so!"

I was out there l967 and 71-76. This is a wonderful book. If you liked this please also read Call It Rhodesia by W A Ballinger and Blood Lily by Mason Cranswick and Birthright by Colin Ainsworth Sharp.

Gustave LeBon (1841-1931) was a French physician who wrote widely on scientific subjects, including anatomy and physiology, anthropology, and history. Many of his writings focused in particular on national traits, crowd behavior, and racial superiority. His numerous books include The Civilization of Arabs, The Psychology of Peoples, and The Crowd.

Why I Avoid Large Groups of People.

_The Crowd: A Study of the Popular Mind_ by French social theorist Gustave LeBon is a short treatise on the principles of large gatherings of people. As the disclaimer on the title page notes, the ideas in LeBon's book were popular at the time of the late 19th century but are no longer in vogue today. The reasons for this are obvious, as LeBon unpretentiously puts to fault all the rhetoric about "democracy," "equality," "fraternity," and "equality" as being mere catchphrases that self-serving demagouges use to control the spirit of the masses. He cites the French Revoloution and the demands of Socialism and Communism during his time. LeBon outlines the way crowds tend to think (in vivid images illogically connected), how they reason (they don't for all practical purposes), how they express exaggerated emotion, how they are very quick to take action without coherent thought and of the general extreme-conservativism and intolerance of crowds. The individual who becomes part of a crowd tends to loose himself, and feels invincible as he is aware of the similarity of mind and purpose of all those surrounding him. LeBon notes how individuals become unthinking entities of the Herd, and can be unconsciously made to do acts, which can either be of great criminality or heroism. The reasoning of the solitary individual is superior to that of a crowd which has no individuality. All are "equal" in a crowd where, for instance, a mathemetician is caught up in the same spirit as a laborer and class and intelligece differences fall to the lowest common denominator. One advangage of crowds is that they can express the spirit of a class, caste, or race of a people better than the individual can, and that crowds are capable of great deeds such as victory in a war or the spread of a religion that would be beyond simply one person's effort. The back title of _The Crowd_ mentions that Hitler, Mussolini in addition to Freud were familiar with LeBon's work, and it is readily apparent that their followers acted very similar to the behavior that LeBon describes. The basic point of _The Crowd_ is this: For Bettor or Worse, Never Underestimate the Power of Stupid People in Large Groups.

I think the reviewer Derek Pillion summed up this book rather well. But I want to relate something that came into my mind after reading the following passage from chapter III:
"A hundred petty crimes or petty accidents will not strike the imagination of crowds in the least, whereas a single great crime or a single great accident will profoundly impress them, even though the results be infinitely less disastrous than those of the hundred small accidents put together.
The epidemic of influenza, which caused the death but a few years ago of five thousand persons in Paris alone, made very little impression on the popular imagination. The reason was that this veritable hecatomb was not embodied in any visible image, but was only learnt from statistical information furnished weekly.
An accident which should have caused the death of only five hundred instead of five thousand persons, but on the same day and in public, as the outcome of an accident appealing stronly to the eye, by the fall for instance of the Eiffel Tower [sic], would have produced, on the contrary, an immense impression on the imagination of the crowd.
... To know the art of impressing the imagination of crowds is to know at the same time the art of governing them."
What came into my mind after reading that passage? Airplanes and collapsing towers. This book is a must read for any thinking person.

More insightful than Macchiavelli

This is a short book whose pages have a far greater impact than the title might suggest. As many reviewers have already noted, the book simply explains the mechanisms that guide the popualr imagination and outlines the simple principles that enable the few who grasp them to hold control over vast populations. What struck me particulalry was how the recipes for power suggested by Gustave Le Bon are reflected in contemporary neo-liberal economic and socio-cultural agendas. Those who are involved in developing education policies will find the book especially useful. Writing over a century ago,Le Bon criticized the liberal education system and advocated the more common sense practical type of learning that neo-liberal agendas have been pushing for since the late 70's. It also makes a strong case for the impact of simple messages over crowds. Common sense arguments, logic and thoughtful concerns, LE Bon argues, are lost on the masses. Indeed, it is widely believed that this was one of Benito Mussolini's favorite books. We are living ever more in an era of simplistic thinking. By reading this book you will understand how this has occurred and how demagogues rise to power. As with another reviewer, I also stay away from crowds. This book unraveled the unconscious instincts that always make me avoid crowds and anything that is too popular.

This story on angels got me hooked. Love. Sacrifice. Loss. Hope. Different emotions. Can't wait to read the 3rd book!

The second novel takes up where the first one ends and is just as good as the first. Michael and Hope are on the run, trying to figure out the prophecy before the Fallen find them and use Hope as a means to return to heaven and start a war. Michael has changed his features to look like her father’s so they can travel without too many questions being raised. They are joined by the prophet Enoch as they try to decipher the clues to the prophecy. Their search will lead them to Las Vegas where they will become involved with criminals who are involved in child sex rings. Hope is determined find Maria who she met in Atlanta and rescues her from those who have taken her once again. She has told Michael that Maria is her top priority and she will not help him until Maria is found and rescued

Their searches are filled with danger and will take them from Vegas to Turkey, and France. Their attraction to each other has resulted in some unforeseen consequences Michael is dangerously close to Falling because he is no longer able to protect mankind and the chaos that is happening through out the world is taking a toll on him. Unfortunately not all things are as they seem and the Fallen are closer than they know. Will they be able to find everything in time and will all of them survive or will the Fallen regain entry to Heaven and destroy the humans that they hate?
I eagerly await the final book in this wonderful series.

Dark Rising I felt was a bit slow in the beginning, I think is mostly because I wanted to see Michael and Hope happily together. :-)

In Dark Hope, Michael and Hope didn't really have a strong relationship, if you'll call it a relationship. To me it felt more like a friendship that could possible become more and in Dark Rising what those two had was just confusing. Michael was distant to Hope for most of the book. It felt like he was angry with her. He wants to protect her but he also wants to do his duty, and that I guess frustrates him, makes him fight his feelings. I felt there was no connection there. I was like " chill man".

Hope did frustrate me a couple times. She was told not to do something and she went and did it. I know she's her own person but when you're in a foreign country, don't speak the language and there's human traffickers, you do not go out for a run by yourself. I'm just saying... I'm just saying... And like five minutes ago Michael had told her not to go out. That's what's frustrating. But besides that I think Hope has grown. Before she was shy and sheltered and now she's running with Angels trying to save human kind and Heaven. She's traveling to many countries learning about history, culture, and about the past and the present. She also realizes that maybe she was wrong about her dad. She's been through a lot, and so have the people she's met.

In Dark Rising we also read about Mona, Don, Tabby, and Enoch. Mona and Don were a big part of this book. We read what Hope's parents were going through while Hope was missing. I don't know why but I didn't really like reading about them. I guess it's because I want to read more about Hope and Michael, is that bad? :-| But once I continued reading, I did get into it. You could see that Mona didn't know how she really felt about Don, and Don I think was hoping for another chance. I did think they were cute together, I had hoped that maybe they could work something out. So in the end, they were alright, after all they are Hopes parents and they just make you root for them. Okay now Tabby, I'm also not that big of a fan, just because I felt she was very bossy and did push Hope to do things she didn't want to do. Enoch, he was like a grandfather to Hope. She easily talked to him, she had felt more at ease with him during the search for the Rock. Crazy things happen to all of these characters, it was surprising. We also do meet new people. And they do a part in helping Hope and Michael out.

I really liked the writing and all the details. McGurk really takes you to the location of the characters with her words. Everything was described with detail, and I love that. It helps you visualize the place, even though you've never been there or know where it is, it feels like you can see it. You can imagine the character there and what they're seeing. It brings the book to life.

Talking about locations, wow, weren't they great. Istanbul, Ireland, France, and all those chapels and churches. Another thing that I like is when authors write about real places. I like to look them up, do my research. It helps with the visualization. The descriptions on the book and the actual picture of the location really helps me understand where these characters are and makes me feel like I'm there. The locations just sounded beautiful. From the buildings to the view, I could just imagine it.

In this book there was more about hiding from the Fallen Ones, searching for the Rock, searching for Hope, understand/admitting how they ( Hope & Michael) felt about each other, and understanding what really needs to happen. There wasn't that much about human trafficking like there was in Dark Hope, but it was mentioned or brought up a couple of times. So human trafficking is still a part of these books.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I wasn't sure what was really going to happen, so that's good. I like surprises. I was shocked, surprised, there was some suspense there, and girl there were also tears, yes tears :-( :-( :-( :'( :'( that's what makes a great book. When it gets you so into these characters that it makes you feel for them, when you feel all these emotions. It makes you forget it's not real. And then you remember , and you're like, "okay, I'm okay, it's okay". I hope to read the next book. What will happen with all those Fallen Ones? With Mona? With Michael and Hope? What will happen to the world? Dun dun dun, I guess I'll have to see.
