About the Author
Hermann Gunkel (18621932) taught at several German universities and is widely recognized as a father of the form-critical and history-of-religions methods in biblical criticism. His influential works include commentaries on Genesis, Psalms, and 1 Peter.

Academic view of Genesis from early 1900's

This made for an interesting read, although the transition to eBook didn't go 100% smoothly. There are some spelling errors and places where it appears that an OCR software didn't recognize characters. There are also places where the translation from the original German to English is a bit awkward.

Technical problems aside, the book was pretty good.

Legends of Genesis holds true to its title and does lead the reader through a process of interpreting Genesis as a collection of legends and explaining the value of the book in this light. Genesis has lost a lot of its value to modern readers, because our view of it has been altered by the Enlightenment and our equating legends or mythology with being 'untrue'.

Later, it assumes that the reader is familiar with the authorship and redactors of the Bible, pointing to examples where each writing style or agenda to the redactor is in the text of Genesis. If you don't have a passing familiarity with J, E, etc, you might get lost.

There are references in the book to other authors, their comments and their works. It seems this was originally published as part of a larger work and in refutation of other scholarly commentary that was going on at the time. If you don't mind that it reads like a textbook and that it references other works without quoting them, there is much to be found here.

Lastly, I am an unbeliever with an academic interest in the Bible and religion. If you're a believer, this book may reveal more than you're comfortable knowing.

Ethereal Stories

It's doubtful that you've made your way to this page unless you already have an appreciation or at least an interest in the works of Robert Aickman. This slim volume of six stories with a foreward by Barry Humphries is a posthumous collection filled out with at least two stories previously collected ('The Stains', and 'The Trains', both appearing in The Wine-dark Sea), and due to the collector premium, may not be worth seeking out to someone new to Mr. Aickman. Completists, on the other hand, may want this one if the rest of their collection lacks some or all of the other stories.

First, a personal word about Mr. Aickman's stories. This collection is subtitled 'Strange Stories', and I don't know if there really is any better way of describing them. There is always a supernatural or supranormal element present, but there is no Sturm und Drang to them, no amateurish surprises at the end. The effect of a Robert Aickman story is more like barometric change in the weather. What was once light and ordinary becomes like an omnipresent yet intangible weight. These are stories of unease, disquiet, and fractured views, stories in the tradition of Arthur Machen, as opposed to Peter Straub.

Summerizing any story by Aickman is a ridiculous project. If one of his stories is like a piece of cake, then my explaining it to you would be like force feeding you all of the ingredients before mixing and cooking. All of the pleasure would be gone. I will simply say that the contents of 'Night Voices' is as indicative of Mr. Aickman's strengths as any of his other collections. The purpose of this review is to give out the information in the Table of Contents for those who may be interested.

Besides the introduction and the two stories mentioned before, there are four other stories.

Just a song at Twilight

Rosamund's Bower
Mark Ingestre: The Customer's Tale

Of these, I enjoyed 'Just a Song at Twilight the most, and Rosamund's Bower the least, though putting any story by Mr. Aickman in a list of most to least favorite really doesn't apply.

Reader's who are interested in Mr. Aickman's stories, or who enjoy supernatural stories in the vein of Arthur Machen would be far better served to begin with The Wine-dark Sea, a larger and more comprehensive collection. The drawbacks to this volume are the two stories available elsewhere (albeit two of his best) and the cost on the used market. Five stars for the content, but only four for the packaging.

what you need to get started

I have read over simplified and over complicated descriptions
of the Kalman filter for years. The theoretical discussion is
well matched to the examples. THe authors have obviously had
extensive experiance TEACHING to a wide range of students and
the book benefits from their experiance.
I was able to program filters for three of the examples that
most closely match my own applications and exploit what I
learned in a matter of hours. The MATLAB code was useful, but
not critical.

Excellent Intro to KF, easy on the rigor..

This is the third edition of an introductory text on Kalman Filtering. It is easy to read, easy to follow: it presents the discrete-time and the continuous-to-discrete KFs in a clear and logical manner. The MATLAB exercises didn't seem to be integrated with the text too well, and they were written in MATALB v 4., so there are a few "corrections" that must be made ("randn" in v. 5, so all the references to "rand" in the MATLAB code must be fixed). The extended KF and some implementation issues (UDU filter, sequential estimation) are not covered as well as other topics. If you are new to the topic and are looking for a good introduction this is the book. If you already know the topic, I'd pass on the text. What I'd like to see is a new edition of Gelb, replete with MATLAB implementations..

Really Nice Reference Book for Transferware

Books on transferware (blue and white) pottery are very hard to find. And it's even harder to find a good one, that has enough information to be useful.

This is a VERY nice reference book for transferware pottery. While not every pattern is pictured (an impossible feat considering how many different patterns there are), there are dozens and dozens of example pictures through out. Beautiful patterns - some of which I had never seen before. They also show numerous examples of the original painting or sketch or engraving next to the transferware pattern, which I found very interesting. Many makers/manufacturers marks and date stamps are covered also.

This book doesn't even attempt to assign monetary prices to the patterns, but as a reference book you can't beat it. Well worth the money!

Very informative, but the vast majority of the photos are black and white! Not ideal. I would not have purchased the book had this been made known.

An absolute masterpiece. Some have said that this book falls short of its predecessor, Faster Than The Speed of Love, but I argue that it greatly surpasses it. If you only read one book this year make it this one. If you read two, make it this one followed by Faster Than The Speed of Love. Don't read three books this year.

This book is excellent reading. Foremost, it discusses clearly all of the major issues today in corporate finance - capital structure, "what investors want", incentives and performance measurement via Accounting versus Economic Value Added models, corporate architecture, etc. The author is extremely engaging, and I must admit, this is the first "text book" I've had that I wanted to keep reading. The author is sarcastic, opinionated, but objective all in one. An excellent purchase for a course or just if you're interested in understanding the way markets and corporate finance truly function.

A good book of ARTICLES but too academic.

Chew's New Corporate Finance is a quite decent book on journal articles on finance issues from a corporate standpoint. Other than your professor's own choice of favourite articles, Chew's may be the next best thing you can get. I won't give it a higher rating (4 or 5 star) because it lacks ground-breaking yet still easy-to-read articles from the less technical journals like Harvard Business Review, etc.
Most of the articles are too academic coming from more or less the same journals. Moreover, the more technical ones have difficult formulas and number-crunching statistics which are more appropriate for MBA and MSc in Finance students, or those in researchers in "high-level derivative work".
I have the second edition (1999) of this book and used it sparingly for my MBA in Finance. And I've browsed through this new edition - what I found was there were not many changes made, only a few new articles have been added. Perhaps inclusion of some non-American articles would do justice to this book. Chew still keeps the classic ones though, which are always relevant. The roundtable discussion on EVA is interesting but Chew does not include criticisms on EVA shortfalls or problems.
On the whole, this text should be a reasonable introduction to high-level Finance and also a good supplementary reading for those doing MBA in Finance. But the editor's selection between technical and easy-to-read-but-important articles still leaves much to be desired.....
