Definitley keep tabs with this guy

I agree with the other reviewer - Travis is a sure guy to keep an eye on for future works. I'm pretty sure as of writing this, he has a couple other things in the works (at least on his website), so there's YAY there.

This is a story of alien invasion/end of the world/humanity survival and he does an EXCELLENT job of portraying it. I was able to imagine clearly many of the things he described in the book, and none of it was excessively wordy (I'm looking at you Robert Jordan). I was always looking forward to picking up the kindle again to read this, and there was a point in the story where I just could not put it down and I think I read the last 25% of the book in one sitting (goodbye sleep!).

Definitely pick this one up. It's a good read!

A writer to keep an eye on!

OK, first up - "Alien Invasion of Earth" is one of those science fiction tropes that every new SF writer takes a shot at. Unlike many of the ones I have read in the past, THIS book is VERY DARN GOOD. It should not escape our notice, that the author is an experienced Military Officer, and understands what it MEANS to be in "the bad, the ugly and the crazy." - and to lead troops into the cauldron of war.

This book is well written, as well as internally consistent. Even if you've never been in combat - it should be apparent to you that Hightower HAS "been there and done that." - and he extrapolates that to a world in which the American Military is reduced to the relative status of Crazy Horse and his Lakota Warriors fighting the Current US Military.

It is not a book without SOME interior problems - but it is far better than some books I have read by much more experienced authors. It ends -somewhat abruptly - but with the strong possibility of a sequel. I do hope that Mr. Hightower will keep on writing, and give us more books of this caliber.

A Refreshing Perspective

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I will highly recommend it not just to University students but learners in every stage of their educational pursuits.

The writing itself is seamless and easy to grasp. The views are stated lucidly and the reasoning behind each and every step is explained properly. This is definitely a manual that can be read by any and everybody without the fear of verbosity while dealing with a packed timetable.

One thing I particularly enjoyed was the book's specificity. There are several self-help books in the market, however to find one that is specifically tailored to the challenges students face is often problematic. I am also pleased that the book is not merely a compendium of experimental theories - but rather a formula which has been tried and trusted, even during the author's academic pursuits.

The actual plot in the book is really small and fluff around it was very predictable.

In most of the books written by this author, the plot revolves around someone setting up a honey trap and invariably it is a lady....

The more I read, all his books are monotonous resembling a movie script than and novel...

Interesting plot that keeps one hooked till the end. This is my first Ravi Subramanian book and found this racy thriller difficult to put down.

One point of improvement that I found was the presence of a number of spelling errors in the e-book that needs to be corrected.

Overall a good read.

A fast moving story but some parts appear a little far fetched. Being a banker himself the author succeeds in holding
the readers interest. All in all it is an enjoyable book worth the money.

For instance, it seems that some early people were interested in the points on the horizon where the moon rises or sets and marked the directions of these points with megaliths. These directions go through a complicated cycle-much more complicated than the cycle of the phases of the moon from new to full and back to new, and more complicated than the cycle of the rising and setting directions of the sun. Other peoples were interested in the irregular motions of the planets and in the way in which the times of rising of the various stars varied through the year, so we need to know about these phenomena, i. e. , about retrogression and about heliacal rising, to usc the technical terms. The book opens with an explanation of these matters. Early astronomers did more than just gaze in awe at the heavenly bodies; they tried to understand the complex details of their movements. The earliest investigations that can be called scientific are concerned with the sky; they are the beginnings of astronomy. Many early civilizations produced astronomical texts, and several cultures that left no written records left monuments and artifacts - ranging from rock paintings to Stonehenge - that show a clear interest in astronomy. Civilizations in China, Mesopotamia, India, and Greece had highly developed astronomies, and the astronomy of the Mayas was by no means negligible. Greek astronomy, as developed by medieval Arab philosophers, evolved into the astronomy of Copernicus. This displaced the Earth from the stationary central position that almost all earlier astronomies had assumed. Soon thereafter, in the first decades of the seventeenth century, Kepler found the true shape of the planetary orbits and Galileo introduced the telescope for astronomical observations. This book covers the history of astronomy from its earliest beginnings to this point, which marks the beginning of modern instrumental and mathematical astronomy. The work of earlier astronomers, of all civilizations, remains as a triumph of the human intellect.

Very disappointing

Much of the content of this book is simple but tedious arithmetic and graphical presentations which give the impression of an unconvincing mix of documented fact and conjecture.
Ample inclusion of much equally unconvincing and largely irrelevant terminology ("The Babylonians also measured... ...using a unit called SHE which literally means 'barley corn'") does little to shed light on the subject.
One could go on but perhaps most telling is the author's allocation of 6 pages (one mostly blank and two and a half containing charts and a photograph) to "Arabic Astronomy," from which came many star names still in use throughout the world and which, some might say, passed almost the entire heritage of astronomy to the Europeans when their commercial interests turned them to navigation at the end of the 15th century (a point not mentioned by the author - his characterization of the Hellenistic Greeks as "Europeans" would probably have been disputed by any member of that ancient culture).

"Poems ask only that they be heard, which is the purpose of the slam," Bob Holman says. It has been ten years since Glazner produced the first National Poetry Slam (perhaps best described as a competitive reading), but many poetry enthusiasts remain virtually unaware of the phenomenon. This volume collects an assortment of slam poems and articles about the slams (setting up, judging, becoming participants, and group pieces). Some articles, such as Lisa Martinovic on using props or Daniel S. Solis on slam aesthetics and strategy, are elemental but extremely useful, while Patricia Smith's brilliant piece on persona poetry adds little to the concept of the slam. Adding to the confusion is the growth of the audience for slams and the broadening of their scope to include many poets published by the academy. Are these the same poets whose poems work perfectly well on the page and would not readily be labeled "performance" poetry? Contributors' notes would have been useful. "Good slamming starts with good writing," Solis states, although at times the material here seems closer to stand-up comedy. A good breaking-in for first time readers

One of the most accesible books around for anyone even remotely interested in poetry. If you've never been to an open mic or a slam, give this one a whirl...it'll make you want to go (and maybe even slip a poem in your pocket before you lock the door). If you've been to an open mic and wondered what else was out there that was like what you just saw, this book captures a great many of those elements for you.
Not just a book of poems, throughout the work are placed a great many essays written by long-time, well-known National slam poets (Taylor Mali, Danny Solis, etc.) about nearly every aspect of reading and performing one's work...a long-overdue codification of information for performing poets at ANY level.
Some of the poems contained within are national favorites, a few legend, but they ALL contain a lesson about performance poetry: that it starts on the page.
A MUST have for any poet who is (or is considering) performing their poetry before audiences in any capacity. A necessary bit of packing for any poet with national aspirations of slamming, touring or just reading.

Better than Good

Gary Glazner has accomplished something unprecedented with this collection -- he has produced the first national-level anthology archiving the Poetry Slam as its own form, in a book by, for, and about the participants. As such, it has many of the aspects of Slam itself. The voices in both the poetry and the accompanying essays are diverse and passionate, representing all ages, races, genders and geography that this Poetry Nation has to offer. For anyone interested in learning more or starting their own Poetry Slam, this is a terrific jumpstart, as well as a great collection of favorites for poets and audience members.

Solid collection lacking a full historical perspective

3.5 stars, really. This anthology is a solid collection representing a wide range of voices STILL involved in the National Poetry Slam scene. Unfortunately, many voices are left out precisely because they are no longer involved in the scene which weakens the collection's importance as an historical document. Nevertheless, the poetry selected, along with the mixed bag of essays, makes this an invaluable supplement to ALOUD, still the king of "poetry slam" anthologies.
