A Comprehensive Philosophical Look at Freedom

This book covers in great depth but in an accessible manner a variety of issues surrounding freedom. Topics include positive vs. negative freedom; freedom and determinism,including a clear discussion about what compatibilism means. Svendsen also discusses the various views of freedom as they relate to the body politic and includes an in depth discussion of Isaiah Berlin's views on the topic, as well as those of John Stuart Mill and John Locke, for example. A refreshing and contemporary chapter discuss the modern notion of "soft paternalism" as presented by Cass Sunstein and Richard Thaler. Svendsen criticizes these authors by attacking their fundamental assumptions about paternalism, in essence saying that any sort of paternalism is bad, with or without nudges or defaults, simply because any paternalistic viewpoint assumes that the paternalist knows better which introduces the problem of who the paternalist is and what it is they know more about. This is a good book to delve deeply into the issues surrounding freedom, what it means and how it can be threatened and challenged.

A refreshing (and unconventional) approach to fulfilling sex and loving relationships

Jost Sauer grew up in a family that was very open about sex and all matters relating to the human body. Orgasms were a common topic of dinnertime chit chat and his parents were never shy about discussing their sexual relationship. It’s no surprise that his desire to educate others sprung from the openness of his unconventional upbringing, and Love-life sees him discussing these issues within the framework of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).

It’s an incredibly refreshing approach; a fascinating and thought-provoking read for anyone who might be struggling with their sex life, or for people in otherwise satisfying relationships who have the desire to take their love life to the next level. It’s hard to believe that Sauer has a history of substance abuse, because his witty and engaging style is infused with warmth, ensuring that the esoteric subject matter is completely relatable to a Western audience.

I highly recommend this book

I highly recommend this book. I'm so glad I read it. It doesn't just answer lots of questions (and you'll have to read it to find out the answers – not giving anything away here!) but its a completely fascinating angle on the function of sex and sexual relationships from the point of view of Chinese medicine and also holistic health. I wish I'd read something like this years ago. I'm going to look for some more books by this author – I like his style!

Una historia de amor, una novela policiaca y un final sorpresivo.

Me gustó la redacción. Esta novela no está escrita de una forma tradicional. Hay párrafos que se repiten a través de la lectura, pero no están de sobra. Es una redacción jovial, con múltiples facetas donde el lector puede encontrar desde situaciones cómicas y groseras, hasta momentos de angustia y terror. Se entretejen momentos donde se disfruta la descripción de situaciones amorosas realmente hermosas. La historia ocurre en tres tiempos diferentes.

Marcus - el personaje principal, es un escritor joven que busca a Harry Quebert, su profesor universitario para que le ayude a superar un momento difícil al resultarle imposible resolver una situación de falta de creatividad para crear un libro que tiene que entregar a la editorial en pocas semanas.

Simultáneamente, el libro describe las situaciones que se dan en el pequeño pueblo al descubrirse el cadaver de una chica de quince años que desapareció hace más de tres décadas. La novela narra no sólo la trama principal que ocurre en Aurora - un pequeño pueblo costeño al noreste de New Hampshire, muy cerca de La frontera con Canada- También incluye situaciones cómicas estiló Woody Allen cuando interactúa con su madre telefónicamente, y con su editor.

La trama se va complicando pues en su intento de escribir su libro, va encontrando pistas de lo ocurrido en ese pequeño pueblo en agosto de 1975.

Esta es la segunda novela de Joel Dicker, sin embargo según entiendo es la primera que traducen al español. En mi personal opinión es una muy buena opción de lectura, en 2013 hay dos libros que he visto que estan de moda Perdida y esta, que he tenido de leer, a mi se me hizo de mejor historia, coherencia y credibilidad la de "La Verdad Sobre el Caso de Harry Quebert", La narración es diferente, interesante, inclusive hay momentos en que pareciera que es un caso real y te hace disfrutar mucho y leer rapido para saber que fue lo que sucedio. En algunos lugares lo ponen como un sucesor de Stieg Larsson de la trilogia de milenio, pero en lo personal, salvo que le autor es Sueco el tema no es tan obscuro como la trilogia de Millenium. El protagonista es muy diferente por lo que siento que algunos que esten buscando algo similar pueden confundirse por los comentarios de algunas personas.

Timothy Nunan is an Academy Scholar at the Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies. Previously, he was an Alexander von Humboldt Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Zentralasien-Seminar of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.

A Thought-Provoking Study of Afghanistan

One of my best friends, who is Afghan-American, heard about this book after a related podcast on the New Books Network. Knowing of my interest in his country, he was kind enough to let me borrow his (not-inexpensive) copy.

I'm a modern history buff, but most of what I know about Afghanistan comes from my buddy's stories and the news. Humanitarian Invasion was a revelation to me -- a fascinating look at Afghanistan before (but also after) the Russians invaded. We have such terrible images of it because of our own experiences there; considering what it was like in the sixties and seventies was alone a revelation. Much of the book is about development - the efforts of Americans, Russians, and Germans to create a modern economy in Afghanistan, and then the efforts of non-governmental organizations to help the Afghans after the Soviet invasion. Here, I'm most impressed with the work that Nunan did interviewing people who worked for the Soviet government in Afghanistan. In fairness, I might have liked a bit more about why the Soviets invaded the place, even though it's clearly not the purpose of the book.

What comes across painfully is that very few of the people here meant ill to Afghanistan. The tragedy that hit that country came often from good intentions, not evil ones. American readers like myself will find the Soviets here to be interesting, well fleshed-out people who sincerely wanted to help and who might not have cared all that much if the Afghans didn't think that much of Lenin. Americans, Germans, and NGO activists were similarly sincere. All of these people collided in 20c. Afghanistan and the results were tragic and explosive. We are still living with them. If Timothy Nunan's book helps a wiser world fix this mess in this century even slightly, we'll have much to thank him for. In the meantime, this is a thoughtful, enjoyable read.

White guy gets to write about Afghanistan and charge 100 dollars for it? Pass.

If you want to read about Afghanistan, get a book written by an Afghan. Y'all think some white dude educated at Oxford knows anything about what "humanitarian invasion" feels like? Talk about taking up too much space. If you're going to buy a book, put your money back into the hands of Afghans, not this dude.
