A great resource for Teachers and Students

"Jazz Drums Now!" is a tool I have used with students as part of their ongoing development. Once students have clear skills in snare drum performance, rudiments, and the basics of modern drum set playing this book by Keith Hall is a step into playing with "finesse." The tools that students acquire with this book give them more control over each part of the drum set, and builds vocabulary for creative expression in any style of music.

The CD is an excellent play-along. On the one hand, Keith demonstrates what he is teaching so students can hear from the CD what they are learning and see it in the printed material. On the other hand, there are many tracks that include Piano and Bass which allow students to perform "with the band." These tracks work on playing from basic mid-range tempos, to slow ballads, to crazy-fast tempos for those desiring a challenge.

Overall, I have been pleased -- as have my students. I highly recommend "Jazz Drums Now!"

Jazz Drums Now! is essential for players of ALL levels

Jazz Drums Now! is an exceptional book!! Useful to the teacher as well as the student, the book thoroughly gives a crash course in beginning jazz. It is great for the more experienced player to revisit as well. The mp3 cd is very helpful, especially for those students who are without teachers. I have used this book for many of my own students. The reading sections are just as informative as the exercises, and there are corresponding lists of tunes/players/records/charts that apply to each exercise/chapter.

Keith Hall is a renown master teacher and player; knowing the author personally and having studied with him for a number of years allows for the credibility of this high quality book. I wish there had been a book like this around when I started studying jazz!!! This book is essential for anyone who has even a small interest in jazz drumming; you don't want to be without it!!!

Get Jazz Drums Now!

Jazz Drums Now! is one of the three drum instruction books out of which I have practiced the most, along with Ted Reed's Syncopation and the Alan Dawson book. It is perfect for young drummers interested in jazz because it truly opens up a world of new possibilities: by the time the student finishes the first chapter, they will already have learned basic swing grooves, unearthed a handful of recordings and drummers to investigate, and played with a professional NYC rhythm section. It is the Realistic Rock of jazz drumming. Jazz Drums Now! should be in every serious drummer's library - even if they do not plan to focus on jazz/swing music - for it will result in more musical and tasteful playing.

As Keith says in the book, "You must learn to swing by yourself before you can swing with others." With this book, both become an achievable goal.

About the Author
Lynne Layton is Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. She is also on the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute for Psychoanalysis and is in clinical practice in Brookline, Massachusetts.

multidisciplinary brilliance

Layton has a triple citizenship in academic gender theory (with its reliance on Lacan and continentally-oriented theorists such as Judith Butler); Anglo-American psychoanalytic practice, with its emphasis on clinical experience and its respect for clients' longing for wholeness; and pop culture (Madonna, Blue Velvet ...). She is unusually gifted at clear, humane, politically-engaged writing; the book is full of thoughtful, insightful writing, including some of the very best writing on Madonna. She is particularly fine in articulating the tensions among different schools of psychonanalysis, always writing about this in a way that is conceptually lucid and personally committed. I wish there were more books by her to read!

Challenging, didactic, never pedantic

An enjoyable set of reversible one way mirrors where approachable and popular icons and genres are exhibits used to explain and to critique implications of cultural and psychoanalytic theories which themselves are employed by the author to understand the dominance of specific icons and the particular content of several cultural forms. On a practical level, the work is an effective counterpoint to the neo-scary pigeonholing of persons and, more specifically, psychotherapy patients, in biological categories which the author demonstrates succesfully are not biological at all.

Originally from Scotland, Professor Fred Watson is now a leading astronomer based at the Anglo-Australian Observatory in Coonabarabran and has his own popular weekly programme on Australia's ABC radio. Finally a microbiology textbook for a biology major that is written in a fresh new way!

I am using this textbook in my majors microbiology course this semester. It is an amazing book that has all the details that I need for my students but is not written in a dry manner. It uses the pedagogy that is so commonly found in non-majors books to help the student majoring in biology / microbiology see the connections between topics, the research behind the science, and applications to their life in the real world. The artwork is amazing and helps the students better visualize the structures and functions they need to learn. The WileyPlus homework that is associated with the textbook is a great way to help students practice what they are learning in class and be better prepared for exams. I am so happy that this book came to market as there was not much of a choice out there for a quality major microbiology textbook. All the other major microbiology textbooks follow the same theme of too much information in too much detail with very little real life application and connections. Finally, we have a microbiology textbook written by someone that not only understands the research behind the content, but can teach it as well!
