A “BACKGKROUND FOR WOMANIST THEOLOGY”

Stephanie MItchem teaches religious studies at the University of South Carolina. She has also written Name It and Claim It?: Prosperity Preaching in the Black Church, African American Women Tapping Power And Spiritual Wellness, and African American Folk Healing.

She explains in the Preface to this 2002 book, “Simply put, womanist theology is the systematic, faith-based exploration of the many facets of the African-American women’s religiosity. Womanist theology is based on the complex realities of black women’s lives. Womanist scholars recognize and name the imagination and initiative that African American women have utilized in developing sophisticated religious responses to their lives. This book will give background for womanist theology. Both the objective visions of the theological enterprise and the subjective vistas of black women’s faith experiences become windows to a clearer understanding of womanist theology. Yet, as an introductory discussion, this text will not explain everything about womanist theology.” (Pg. ix)

She observes, “Womanist theology starts with analysis of roles assigned to African American women by their families and the dominant culture, the persistent stereotypes about black women, the combination of race with gender, and recognition of diversity among women. For black women to do this analysis is, in itself, empowering as we discover truths about ourselves.” (Pg. 23)

She states, “Womanist theology must draw from the meanings that already exist in black women’s lives. The lived theologies of individual black women cannot be dismissed as the empty activities of the ignorant. Womanist theologians recognize the richness of black women’s communal expressions of theology. These lived theologies become part of the womanist theological text.” (Pg. 49)

She points out, “Womanist theology becomes a center where all the ideas already raised have a home with safe space for discussion and discovery. Womanist theology is an opportunity to state the meanings of God in the real time of black women’s lives. Womanist theology explores the magic of black women’s religious meaning-worlds, in all the various forms… Womanist theology brings unstated assumptions about black women to a place where they can be explored, refined, and celebrated or debunked.” (Pg. 60)

She acknowledges, “[Patricia Hill] Collins’s comments on womanist thought indicate the complex discussions among black women scholars who seek to shape their disciplines and to name themselves in the process. Her comments bring into relief the reality that the lines of demarcation between black feminist and womanist are often blurred.” (Pg. 90)

She summarizes, “Womanist theology is focused on black women, analyzing the intricate layers of their lives. This focus aims to uncover the ordinary theologies that operate within black women’s lives and incorporate these ideas in womanist theological constructions… Ethical and social analyses of all forms of oppressions give definition to womanist theology. Ongoing dialogues with other perspectives are constitutive of constructions of womanist theology.” (Pg. 105-106)

She concludes, “Womanists generally view theology as ‘God-talk, a way of thinking that keeps the human dimension front and center. For womanists, God-talk must encompass both words and actions in divine-to-human and human-to-human contacts. This contrasts with the idea that theology can be a ‘study of God,’ a process that abstracts theology and blurs the lines of human activity. Womanist theology is a continuing project that participates in the ongoing, full human effort to refine God-talk.” (Pg. 143-144)

This relatively short book is an excellent introduction and overview to the subject, and will be of great help to those “new” to the subject, or wanting a “refresher” course.

A short introduction to the history of the history profession.

Twenty years ago, Roy Rosenweig, (founder and director of the Center for History and New Media, 1994-2007) asked Robert Townsend how “new media” would change scholarship for historians. Townsend’s latest response is a study of the historical enterprise, beginning with the tipping point reached in the late 19th century wherein the scientific method usurped traditional approaches of the “gentlemen scholars.” Adaptation of the methods of the scientific community opened new lines of inquiry and analysis, permitting historians to spend entire careers in narrow and obscure areas of study. Concurrently, expansion of public and university libraries and archives democratized access to primary documents, fueling employment for professional historians, further specialization, and potentially lessening isolation between academics, educators, and “others” engaged in archival and public history work.
“New media” democratizes access to primary material in ways barely imaginable two decades ago. Like any democracy, the results are messy. For each new tool, there is proper application and maladaptation. Digitally manipulated and available sources increase potential for new discovery and new myths. The vandals are at the gates of the ivory towers; peasants are erecting their own villages on the King’s land and rally: “Information wants to be free!” Townsend’s history tells us that the historical enterprise has experienced this before and survived, with scar tissue that sometimes limits agility. He encourages discerning leadership, better collaboration between the established professions, and assimilation of the tools, technology, and ideas of the people who bear them to the gates.

The book is elegantly structured with nine chapters - three eras each detailing the history enterprise from local history, academia, and education. The missed opportunities to create a large cooperative enterprise of many disciplines does much to explain why so many of the history "cousins" too often do not work well together today. This book is eye-opening and crucial to the understanding of why history is preserved the way it is currently.

The tool's guide to life!

The poor grammar and the lack of proper punctuation make it difficult to read. I guess you don't get much of a proof reader at $.99 a copy. The content is amateurish at best. I would describe this book as "Tool-ish". Like something you would get free with a Charles Atlas body building guide, ordered from the back of Capt Crunch cereal.

Ages 6 and up. This book was first published 25 years ago but has been reissued with a new introduction by Lawrence. Combining a spare, rhythmic text with a stunning series of narrative paintings, it tells the story of Harriet Tubman, who escaped from slavery but returned to the South 19 times to lead more than 300 people to freedom in the North. "Some were afraid, / But none turned back, / For close at their heels / Howled the bloodhound pack." Like the words, the pictures are full of urgency and directed movement; the figures--stark, strong, and simplified--blend in shape and color with the forest world that hides them and helps them escape to the North. Harriet is like a great protective angel; her brown hand, huge and powerful, is like the spreading roots and branches of the trees. And always the North Star shines at the top edge of the painting to light the runaways' flight to freedom. In word and image, Lawrence shows and tells how story can inspire you: Harriet as a child heard the story of Moses; Lawrence as a child heard about Harriet; now his book tells children about this strong brave woman who led her people on the "perilous journey" to the Promised Land. Two heroes

First published in 1968, this artistic book tells the awe-inspiring story of Harriet Tubman. It ought to be on the list of children's bestsellers, for it gives children the stories of two American heroes for the price of one. The first is the title figure, Harriet Tubman (1820-1913), who escaped from slavery but courageously returned south 19 times to lead more than 300 others to freedom. The second is Jacob Lawrence (1917-2000), who made this magnificent series of illustrations in 1939 and 1940.
The text is poetic. Early in the story, on a hot summer day in about 1820, "a group of slave children were tumbling in the sandy soil in the state of Maryland," Harriet Tubman among them. She dreamed of freedom and escaped, but returned to help others. The story builds as the selfless African-American leader risked her life many times to help others reach freedom. "Some were afraid, / But none turned back, / For close at their heels / Howled the bloodhound pack."
As the story closes, young readers find an enthralling figure of Harriet Tubman building support for the anti-slavery movement. At every convention within 500 miles, she could be found speaking in words and tones that brought tears to the eyes and sorrow to the hearts of all listeners.
Lawrence's paintings, made in tempera colors and poster paints, are poetic, too. Trained in the art workshops of Harlem in the 1930s, including the Utopia Children's House and the Harlem Art Workshop (sponsored by the New Deal), Lawrence became one of the finest African-American artists in U.S. history. His extraordinary talent was recognized when he was still relatively young.
Born in Atlantic City, New Jersey, he moved to Easton, Pennsylvania and then at seven to Philadelphia. At 13, Jacob moved again, to Harlem. Drawing on Bible stories and the powerful Christian sermons, often given on street corners, Lawrence remembered orators who spoke with reverence of Harriet Tubman and determined to show the African-American struggle for freedom in his art.
The Tubman series was one of Lawrence's earliest. It predated by only a couple of years the 60-panel migration series that made Lawrence's career in 1941-42. Half that series was bought by the Philips Gallery in Washington D.C. and the other half by the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
But Lawrence's Tubman work is among his best. This book's only shortcoming is that it does not reproduce all of the Tubman paintings. Several were excluded and can be seen only in an art museum, or the pages of an art catalogue. But don't let that stop you. Children will find themselves doubly enriched. Alyssa A. Lappen

Does every book need words? I love it!

This beautiful book tells the story of Harriet Tubman's life in pictures by Lawrence. The story is simply written but the art is the true draw. Many students know the story of Tubman before they get to 8th grade. I use this text to practice a prediction strategy. I had students only look at the pictures and write an outline for the story of the book. The stories were quite interesting, but all seemed to twist their stories to be about Tubman in the end. It makes a great short story portfolio piece.
