The Speaker's Quote Book provides the attention-getting story or that "just right" quote that adds depth to any sermon or presentation.

This and over 5,000 more quotes, stories, anecdotes, and illustrations from The Speaker's Quote Book will help the pastor prepare a better sermon or the speaker present a better speech. This new collection of both contemporary and classic material puts a wealth of interest-building illustrations at one's fingertips. I believe this book can be beneficial for writers also. Roy Zuck's book has been around for awhile, but this is the new revised, expanded and updated version.

My thoughts about the book: As I do public speaking and pulpit fill for churches I am always looking for good and appropriate illustrations and quotations for my messages. In the book "The Speaker's Quote Book" by Roy B. Zuck I have found a vast and assorted range of illustrations and quotes to choose from. The quote are alphabetized by topic for easy reference and there is something to be said for just about every occasional imaginable in the book.

The content of the book is what i was looking for and excellent.

However I am very disappointed to find the book was very poorly presented re the cost. The pages in the central part of the book poorly cut, pages 192 - 224 unable to properly open these pages. Very disaapointing is a book this expnsive inc. post

Continuing coverage of the Pirc

Vigus intends this book as an update to his earlier Pirc in Black and White. Of note for players of the Pirc, he responds to Greet's recommendations (published in 2011) as well as going off in a few new directions. As with the earlier, more comprehensive work, Vigus organizes the contents around 50 stem games, with only one played in 2006 and all the rest played subsequently. He quotes quite a bit from the practice of the top GM's, including Ivanchuk, Kramnik and Svidler (as Black) and Karjakin, Shirov and Caruana (as White), as well as offering his own improvements and analysis. Although Vigus is definitely an advocate of the Black side of the Pirc, he is also generally pragmatic about the lines where Black faces the greatest challenges. And, as is common for this series, shout-out boxes point to key developments, warnings, interesting ideas, and the like.

There are a few key lines where Vigus says there is nothing to add since his earlier book, so this is definitely more of an update than a standalone repertoire. But for the player who wants to make a serious attempt at taking up the Pirc, TPIBAW and the present volume make an excellent and highly up-to-date brace of training manuals.

A “BACKGKROUND FOR WOMANIST THEOLOGY”

Stephanie MItchem teaches religious studies at the University of South Carolina. She has also written Name It and Claim It?: Prosperity Preaching in the Black Church, African American Women Tapping Power And Spiritual Wellness, and African American Folk Healing.

She explains in the Preface to this 2002 book, “Simply put, womanist theology is the systematic, faith-based exploration of the many facets of the African-American women’s religiosity. Womanist theology is based on the complex realities of black women’s lives. Womanist scholars recognize and name the imagination and initiative that African American women have utilized in developing sophisticated religious responses to their lives. This book will give background for womanist theology. Both the objective visions of the theological enterprise and the subjective vistas of black women’s faith experiences become windows to a clearer understanding of womanist theology. Yet, as an introductory discussion, this text will not explain everything about womanist theology.” (Pg. ix)

She observes, “Womanist theology starts with analysis of roles assigned to African American women by their families and the dominant culture, the persistent stereotypes about black women, the combination of race with gender, and recognition of diversity among women. For black women to do this analysis is, in itself, empowering as we discover truths about ourselves.” (Pg. 23)

She states, “Womanist theology must draw from the meanings that already exist in black women’s lives. The lived theologies of individual black women cannot be dismissed as the empty activities of the ignorant. Womanist theologians recognize the richness of black women’s communal expressions of theology. These lived theologies become part of the womanist theological text.” (Pg. 49)

She points out, “Womanist theology becomes a center where all the ideas already raised have a home with safe space for discussion and discovery. Womanist theology is an opportunity to state the meanings of God in the real time of black women’s lives. Womanist theology explores the magic of black women’s religious meaning-worlds, in all the various forms… Womanist theology brings unstated assumptions about black women to a place where they can be explored, refined, and celebrated or debunked.” (Pg. 60)

She acknowledges, “[Patricia Hill] Collins’s comments on womanist thought indicate the complex discussions among black women scholars who seek to shape their disciplines and to name themselves in the process. Her comments bring into relief the reality that the lines of demarcation between black feminist and womanist are often blurred.” (Pg. 90)

She summarizes, “Womanist theology is focused on black women, analyzing the intricate layers of their lives. This focus aims to uncover the ordinary theologies that operate within black women’s lives and incorporate these ideas in womanist theological constructions… Ethical and social analyses of all forms of oppressions give definition to womanist theology. Ongoing dialogues with other perspectives are constitutive of constructions of womanist theology.” (Pg. 105-106)

She concludes, “Womanists generally view theology as ‘God-talk, a way of thinking that keeps the human dimension front and center. For womanists, God-talk must encompass both words and actions in divine-to-human and human-to-human contacts. This contrasts with the idea that theology can be a ‘study of God,’ a process that abstracts theology and blurs the lines of human activity. Womanist theology is a continuing project that participates in the ongoing, full human effort to refine God-talk.” (Pg. 143-144)

This relatively short book is an excellent introduction and overview to the subject, and will be of great help to those “new” to the subject, or wanting a “refresher” course.

A short introduction to the history of the history profession.

Twenty years ago, Roy Rosenweig, (founder and director of the Center for History and New Media, 1994-2007) asked Robert Townsend how “new media” would change scholarship for historians. Townsend’s latest response is a study of the historical enterprise, beginning with the tipping point reached in the late 19th century wherein the scientific method usurped traditional approaches of the “gentlemen scholars.” Adaptation of the methods of the scientific community opened new lines of inquiry and analysis, permitting historians to spend entire careers in narrow and obscure areas of study. Concurrently, expansion of public and university libraries and archives democratized access to primary documents, fueling employment for professional historians, further specialization, and potentially lessening isolation between academics, educators, and “others” engaged in archival and public history work.
“New media” democratizes access to primary material in ways barely imaginable two decades ago. Like any democracy, the results are messy. For each new tool, there is proper application and maladaptation. Digitally manipulated and available sources increase potential for new discovery and new myths. The vandals are at the gates of the ivory towers; peasants are erecting their own villages on the King’s land and rally: “Information wants to be free!” Townsend’s history tells us that the historical enterprise has experienced this before and survived, with scar tissue that sometimes limits agility. He encourages discerning leadership, better collaboration between the established professions, and assimilation of the tools, technology, and ideas of the people who bear them to the gates.

Fantastic context

The book is elegantly structured with nine chapters - three eras each detailing the history enterprise from local history, academia, and education. The missed opportunities to create a large cooperative enterprise of many disciplines does much to explain why so many of the history "cousins" too often do not work well together today. This book is eye-opening and crucial to the understanding of why history is preserved the way it is currently.
