Dave Canterbury is the co-owner and supervising instructor at the Pathfinder School in Ohio, which was named by USA Today as one of the Top 12 Survival Schools in the United States. LIKE DAVE CANTERBURY, BUT THIS BOOK IS PRETTY WORTHLESS

This publisher (Adams Media) let Dave Canterbury down, and Dave admits that in his review of his own book. Due to ignorant editing, parts of this book are completely useless. In the trapping section, there are NO pictures, diagrams, or anything to show how to set these traps. I know that Dave knows how to do these things because I enjoyed watching him on "Dual Survivor", but his stupid publisher cut out the diagrams, rendering this section TOTALLY useless. I hope that Dave finds a new, COMPETENT publisher for the next edition. Other reviewers correctly pointed out that some reviewers gave high ratings to Dave Canterbury himself rather than honest ratings of this book. BOTTOM LINE IS THAT THIS BOOK PROVIDES VERY LITTLE INFORMATION THAT YOU CAN ACTUALLY USE, due to the ignorance of the publisher.

Great Book from an Experienced Author

Just finished reading Bushcraft 101 cover-to-cover and overall I am impressed. Dave covers a wide range of woodcraft related subjects, from tool and gear selection, to setting up camp, to harvesting food.

In Part 1 he covers the "5 C's" (Cutting, Container, Cordage, Cover, Combustion) in-depth. These are the items that will most directly affect your survival and ability to maintain your core temperature outdoors. They are also the hardest to reproduce in the wild from natural materials.
* He lists many different options for each category, historic and modern, and lists some pro's and con's for most of them. He gives his personal preferences for each, which usually favor durability and longevity over weight and price. Getting the best bang for your buck, as it were.
* He covers gear maintenance and repair which is nice.
* The knots section is well done, with clear illustrations. There are not a ton of knots here, but the ones listed are multifunctional, and useful in many different scenarios.

If looking for an ultra-light hiking guide you may want to look elsewhere, Dave does tend to go a bit tool heavy. But if you want solid choices that will last for many years and serve you well, his recommendations are a great guideline. Also remember that they are just that, recommendations. If weight is a higher priority for you, and you want to choose a Sil-Ny tarp over Oilskin, go for it. If you want Titanium instead of Stainless (and can afford it), go for it. Your experience in the woods belongs to you, go with what will make the time more enjoyable for you.

In Part 2 he gets more into the camping side of woodcraft. He covers topics ranging from how to set up your camp, navigating terrain, and trapping.
* The setting up camp section is well done, with a lot of tips on how to get the most enjoyment out of your time in the woods, and can help avoid many of the pitfalls that could lead to a negative experience.
* The navigation section covers Map and Compass use in-depth. He also gives suggestions on how to create your own maps of your local area.
* The trapping section is excellent. He covers several types of traps, modern and primitive, and gives recommendations on placement and baiting to help you achieve the most success. This is a bit of an advanced topic to be in a '101' book though.

Some things that could be better:
* As others (including Dave) have said, the book could use more illustrations and/or pictures. There are a lot of illustrations in the book, but some of the sections like Trees and Plants would have been a much greater benefit with some pictures. Words alone can only go so far, and a picture is worth 1000 of them. :)
* Some sections could be expanded on a bit more. They felt a bit 'rushed', and not covered as deeply as they could be. For example Fishing is mentioned a couple times, but not really covered in depth. In many cases (if near appropriate water) fishing can be a much more reliable method for catching food than trapping.
* I wouldn't really label this as a 'survival' manual. While many of the topics covered could help in a survival situation, they are presented from the perspective of Wood/Bushcraft, camping, and just generally being comfortable and having fun in the outdoors.

One thing to keep in mind here though is that this is a "101" book. It is an introduction, a primer to get you interested and get you out and enjoying the outdoors yourself.

Overall I like the book. For my experience I've been an outdoorsman my entire life. My parents had me out camping when I was only a week old more than 35 years ago. :) And I've been camping/hunting/fishing every chance I get since. I have also watched all of Dave's Youtube videos and I watch/read many others from the Bushcraft/Survival field as well. I have a real passion for this stuff. Even with all that I still picked up some new knowledge from this book. It's good to get a different perspective on things to help in evaluating your own choices. I think this book deserves a place in any outdoorsman's collection.

Not bad, but not complete

There are some good topics covered in here, but this is not a complete bushcraft guide. If you want to go into the wilderness with a hard-frame pack carrying wool blankets and 100 lbs of small animal traps, this book is for you. There is also great detail in the coverage of tarps, shelters, and how to treat cloth to build a good shelter in the woods. The section on knife care is also superb; better than most. However, the emphasis seems to be on shelter, warmth, axe/knife care, compass navigation, and wood harvesting as applicable to the Eastern woods. There is barely a page on fishing and not nearly enough discussion of fishing, harvesting plants, cordage, and firestarting. Perhaps that's why the author has another book called "Advanced Bushcraft."
Overall this book taught me some good things I didn't know, but I am glad I have some other bushcraft books to supplement with. The book is mercifully small and light, so it is one you can carry into the woods with you, unlike some. I recommend supplementing this book with Tom Brown, Jr.'s Wilderness Survival book which covers much of what this book lacks. However, neither of these books has quite enough in the way of pictures/illustration.

Ball by ball accounts of cricket matches can be hard going in real time, but in fictional accounts it's extremely difficult to care. Particularly about such thin characters that appear and disappear so randomly. It holds some interest as a study in the typical concerns and at times obscure social rules of `good form' in a British public school in the early twentieth century, but this is hardly why I read Wodehouse. I don't suppose I read him particularly for plot either, but this one is just too much of a mess. The uncle of the title, for example, is central and then inexplicably forgotten. Perhaps the market was for ex or current pupils that could empathise with the situations without needing to particularly engage with the characters.

This is still Wodehouse, and his characters and descriptions often display his (fabulous) characteristic wit. But his love of cricket and rugby here goes beyond charm and into tedium. Later golf books, for example, get the mix right. As I work my way through the unavoidably hit and miss vast canon I hope it isn't too long before I'm back to hits.

For Wodehouse completists only

Like Sir Pelham's first book, _The Pothunters_, _A Prefect's Uncle_ is largely devoid of the plot, effort, and genius of his later works. There is a rather weak and uninteresting main plot, and a minor subplot that depends on a preposterous and unnecessary coincidence, and there are some slightly memorable characters, so Sir Pelham has made some progress since his first novel.

This book is totally hilarious! One loud laugh after another! A Wodehouse masterpiece!

If you love Monty Python, Faulty Towers, Jeeves and Wooster, Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, and other witty British Comedies, you'll love this great Wodehouse work. The writing, plot, wit, and word play is spot on. This is timeless stuff. And can I add terrific? This is laugh out loud funny. I adored every moment!

About the Author

Gregory S. Carpenter is the James Farley/Booz Allen Hamilton Professor of Marketing Strategy and director of the Center for Market Leadership at the Kellogg School of Management of Northwestern University, and he hosts the annual Kellogg Marketing Leadership Summit. He is a frequent speaker on marketing strategy, and his research has been featured in Harvard Business Review, Financial Times, and NPR.

Gary F. Gebhardt is Associate Professor of Marketing at HEC Montreal. He teaches marketing strategy, market-focused innovation, B2B and channel marketing in the MBA, MSc, and McGill-HEC Montreal EMBA programs. He worked as a consultant and executive in industry for thirteen years before earning his PhD in Marketing at Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management.

John F. Sherry, Jr. is Herrick Chair and Chairman of the Marketing Department at University of Notre Dame. An anthropologist, he taught at Northwestern's Kellogg School for over two decades. He has researched, lectured, and consulted around the globe on issues of brand strategy, experiential consumption, and retail atmospherics.

Great Look at Customer Focused Companies

This is a terrific look at the potential and challenge of becoming customer focused. The book highlights how some companies managed a transformation and other companies failed. One big learning: you can't just hire some marketing people and turn them loose. Senior management has to lead the effort and get everyone working together.

This book is a famous classic. The commentaries on historically important problems and the mathematicians who solved them are fascinating and entertaining and fun reading even for non-mathematicians. The mathematical presentation is demanding, but if you get through it you'll definitely have achieved something. WARNING: A professor tells me that the problems in this book include many that would stump most professors! This book is not suitable as a universal textbook. But there are also many problems that ordinary students will be able to do.

An absolute gem of textbook!

I've taught upper division students from this book (and the first edition) 5-6 times for over a decade. I remain impressed by the broad range of topics from which the teacher and reader can select. As with his excellent calculus textbook, the author tries to show students how mathematics is a human activity, a subject that developed in response to actual needs and which is still lively and developing. No part of mathematics illustrates this development better than the topic of differential equations, which was invented to solve pressing problems in astronomy. One example: In Newton's time, accurate location of position on the open seas was an unsolved problem, crucial to commerce. New techniques from differential equations led to the ready calculation of tables which, together with the invention of Harrison's sea-going chronometer, effectively solved the navigation problem. Differential equations lie at the core of the physical sciences and engineering and are proving increasingly valuable in biology and medicine. Simmons' book will not appeal to readers who want merely recipes with examples of their use. Such readers might prefer the excellent books from the Schaum's Outline Series. Those readers who want to see vital mathematics well presented, those readers who think that mathematics stops at trigonomerty or the calculus, those readers who want to use differential equations intelligently, and those readers who just like a cracking good mathematics story should get a copy of Simmons' book and read.

An excellent guide to reinsurance in the Lloyds market
