Great information. I bought the series to gain more knowledge about planes. This book is geared to future mechanics and goes into much detail. I enjoyed learning of the little details that go into pane design. Good series of books!

I kept thinking that this "novel" is actually autobiographical; ...

I kept thinking that this "novel" is actually autobiographical; but (fortunately) not the ending. DeBeauvoir's struggles with her insecurities are made painfully clear. In re-reading some of the episodes, I had a different opinion of the young woman. Maybe she really was innocent and accepting of the arrangement. Simone needed to understand "compersion", a term in the polyamory community. They all accepted the open arrangement; but Simone apparently felt that her position as the "primary" was threatened. The ending was troubling for me. Who really is the evil one, eh? Definitely worth reading and debating for a while.

Semi-Autobiographical Account of Beauvoir's Life

"She Came to Stay" is mostly a non-fictional account of a menage-a-trois between Simone de Beauvoir, Jean-Paul Sartre, and Olga Kosakievicz (who the book is dedicated to). Kosakievicz was a student of Beauvoir's and later developed a relationship with Beauvoir and Sartre. They were the dominate members of the trio and Kosakievicz was more of a submissive tag-along. Even after the trio split up Kosakivicz would remain financially dependent on Sartre and remain close friends with Beauvoir.

Beauvoir, much like Sartre, uses fiction as a way to explain philosophical concepts such as freedom and bad faith. "She Came to Stay" was published in 1943 and written at the same time Sartre was working on "Being and Nothingness." Beauvoir actively helped Sartre in his writing and the philosophical undertone of "Being and Nothingness" is apparent in "She Came to Stay."

Beauvoir's first novel does have two possible flaws. First, the writing is not pulp fiction. Like Sartre's writing it sometimes sacrifices the story for philosophical reasoning. This is not necessarily a flaw but it does make some sections of the novel rather dry. Second, Beauvoir's account of her emotions and actions are sometimes rather restricted. The novel was published in 1943 and she was still in contact with nearly everyone she wrote about. Her posthumously released "Letters to Sartre" give a much more detailed account of her affair with Olga.

"She Came to Stay" is a good novel to read for anyone interested in Beauvoir, the French intellectual elite of the late 1930's, or taboo relationships.

I want my cd/dvd :-(

I really wanted to hate this title because no cd/dvd you have to access the information online. You can download it to your computer though so you do not have to keep going back. Well on to the material honestly if you own a lot of blues material already you may pick up a trick or two from Kirk Fletcher but pretty standard fare with his take on the subject. It was nice seeing him actually demonstrate all the material the only real reason I give it 4 stars is the online material is not marked and the first few times through and there is no way to know except through your ears and watching where he is playing at in the examples which for a beginner may be a little bit confusing otherwise a nice edition to the blues guitar collection. I recommend for Kirk Fletcher fans and for folks wanting to jazzy or spice up their blues a bit overall good.

I, unlike another reviewer, wanted to love this offering. Unfortunately, there isn't enough to love. The lack of a DVD *is* a minus, but if Kirk delivered the goods, all would be forgiven. The huge deficiency of the material is its lack of depth. The video lessons probably average four minutes - not enough for much more than a platitude or two, a lick or phrase, and a comment. I don't remember a complete solo anywhere. It just isn't enough - at least for me.

I like the sections on different blues styles. And I like that Kirk starts with a section devoted to rhythm and them goes to soloing in the second section. I noted that he included a rhythm section on Rock, but didn't follow up with a solo section. A rock solo in a book on blues might not make much sense, but maybe something with a straight-eight feel? Maybe it's just me.

Kirk is unquestionably talented and experienced, and a very nice guy from all indicators. I just wish each section was longer and maybe had 48 bars of examples.

Beautiful Mizuhiki works of art
By Novice looking for a guide
This book displays wonderful examples of Mizuhiki knots - simple to amazingly intricate. The history provided was fascinating and I enjoyed the explanations of uses and occasions for making and giving them. I was hoping for instruction and was disappointed that there weren't clear diagrams showing how to make some of the beautiful creations.

An excellent resource for information on the Mizuhiki knots. I was just looking for a "how to" book, which this is not. If you are looking for background information and history of the tradition, this is a quick and simple read.

Captive is a new UKYA thriller from debut author A.J. Grainger and it's a great addition to the genre. This is the story of sixteen year old Robyn, daughter of the British Prime Minister, who has been taken hostage by environmental activists so they can use her as leverage to get one of their group members released from prison. Robyn has already witnessed an attack on her father but that was nothing compared to the terror she now faces as she is held prisoner by a group of masked assailants. Unfortunately for Robyn, the kidnapping is only the beginning and as she gets to know one of her captors she realises she's at the centre of a conspiracy that may turn her whole world upside down forever.

This is a very fast paced story that throws readers into the action quite quickly as we see Robyn's capture in a terrifying second attack on her family. Robyn was very easy to relate to and I thought her reactions to the situation she found herself in were very realistic, she is frightened and uncertain but she is also incredibly brave as she tries several times to escape. Robyn is forced to examine the relationship she has with her father and it is incredibly upsetting for her when she realises that he won't do the one thing that will guarantee her release. She also has to ask herself some difficult questions about her family and whether her Dad has been lying to her.

Captive is the kind of book that makes you think, it touches on environmental issues, love and loyalty to your family and about being brave enough to face the truth even when that means uncovering something distressing. I think my only complaint was that the ending felt a little rushed and as much as I ended up liking both Robyn and Talon their relationship was a bit too Stockholm Syndrome for me to be able to take it seriously. What I did like was that all of the characters took responsibility for their actions and they suffered the consequences for them. I think I would just have preferred a longer epilogue to give us a bit more detail about how things turned out, I guess the advantage of a fairly open ending is that readers can all choose how they would like to see the character's futures. Either way, Captive is a great debut and A.J. Grainger is definitely an author to watch out for!

My Thoughts: Honestly, when I started this one, I wasn’t sure if I would enjoy it or not. Sometimes I like kidnapping books, other times I do not.

I really liked it. I thought it was a good one. I enjoyed the plot, but I also liked the characters more than anything.

We are introduced to Robyn who is just a normal teenager. She has most teenage problems, except for one exception. Her dad is the prime minister of the UK. This means her life is always in danger. Something could happen to her or her family. Terrorists, threats, a lot of things really.

When Robyn gets kidnapped it is quite the whirlwind for her. Two of the kidnappers were pretty mean, and jerks. I didn’t like those two at all. Both of them rubbed me the wrong way from the beginning. But, there was another one. His name was Talon. I really liked him a lot. I wanted him and Robyn to become friends. I found myself rooting for him many times during the book.

I felt at times this book was very fast paced however it did feel like her kidnapping lasted forever. At times, I just wanted her to be found or to escape.

I really liked learning about her relationship with her dad and her little sister. I liked her family a lot even if things weren’t perfect.

I think I liked the parts between Talon and Robyn the most out of the whole novel. But I never really felt completely right about it either. It was a hard one to grasp.

Overall: I did really enjoy this one all in all. I liked Talon and I understood why he was the way he was. It was just hard wanting Robyn to like Talon because he was in on the kidnapping but I always liked the scenes with them. I really liked Captive a lot.
