I used this book in Graduate School at Purdue in a Gas Dynamics class taught by the co-author, J.D. Hoffman. A excellent, in-depth text, that starts with the fundamentals and builds. The best and most comprehensive book on the subject I've seen.

If you don't already have Zucrow's Gas Dynamics, then perhaps you should. Excellent, lucid read. Every equation is derived, which is most helpful. Chapter 4 is especially interesting (1D isentropic flow with area change), My only "complaint," if you could consider it so, is that the treatment for Mass Addition in Chapter 9 was far too brief. It is akin to the "ballistic element method" used in some preliminary solid propellant rocket motor design codes such as SPP. Expansion on that topic would be welcomed, and perhaps even a brief treatment about the serious problem of slot flow and vena contracta (mentioned on one page only). Even though that is a 2D/3D problem, it is not even mentioned in Gas Dynamics Volume 2. A great read... Buy This Book!

Good premise but poorly written

The concept is a good one, and the scientific stuff is good; however, the writing style sounds like someone who doesn't speak English wrote it. The expression is "with the exception of." The author used an awkward version of this phrase throughout; one I've never heard before.
The attempt at a Russian accent ended up sounding more like Tonto or Frankenstein. All in all, I almost didn't finish the book because the writing was so awkward.

Great beginning

I was hooked instantly with the beginning of this post-apocolyptic novel, small family trekking north to avoid the flooding from extensive global warming. Rescued by a hunter at the point they are nearly out of options, they are introduced to a 'survival village' in the far north.

Interesting concept and good character development but some of the plot lines seemed somewhat unlikely, a bit too much of a stretch for a comfortable suspension of belief for me. Last half of the book in particular wasn't nearly as tightly written, seemed to go too many new/different directions.

My biggest problem with this was the very odd "Russian accent" written for one of the major characters, which seemed extreme as well as inaccurate. It was definitely a jarring note in the dialog for me.

The interesting aspect of this fictional, near-apocalyptical scenario was the imagination of the author. Though I'm not a climate change believer, I found the idea of people trekking north to Alaska for survival a very reasonable plot where climatology set the basis for the well written mysteries that abounded throughout the book. The domed city, Alaskan mountain caves with the idea that there were many such underground facilities around the world, how the author imagined a new culture surviving within abnormal circumstances...a new society forced to abandon the old ways for an entirely new set of rules and government, along with a little romance thrown in here and there with various characters of different backgrounds attempting to find ways of living together in this new world, all bode well for an entertaining book. The characters were developed well enough that I got to know them and cared about what happened to them. I would like to see the platform of this story and its personalities expanded into a sequel. It matters not whether every i is dotted and every t crossed, it was a great story, well-developed and I would not only recommend it, but would read the sequel if the author should publish one.

A Wonderful Glimpse Into the Mind of a Troubled Creative Genius

Dick's life, and his literary creations, were not as disconnected as some might think. For most of his life, he struggled with a variety of mental and emotional challenges that were often reflected in the stories he told.

Toward the end of his life he began to have what many would describe as a mental breakdown, yet he retained a kind of clarity, of self-analytical passion, that drove him to delve deeply into the experiences he was having. These experiences, reflected in his last 5 or 6 novels, are documented in letters and notes, and in an almost obsessive journal of thoughts and ideas he struggled with during the final years of his life.

Some have criticized this tome as ponderous, confusing, and poorly edited. For me, it is raw, pure, unfiltered Dick. Some is sad, some illuminating, and some hysterically funny, but I'm glad to have it all so that I can find my own path to his mind, and heart.

Unforgettable, albeit confusing in parts.

From the author responsible for "Bladerunner" and "Total Recall" comes this very personal record of schizophrenia, conspiracy and hallucinatory mysticism. The bulk of "Valis" deals with Dick's attempts to understand the teachings of the ancient gnostic Christians - a quest which took on new urgency as Dick came to believe that the Roman Empire was using technology supplied by evil aliens to keep time frozen at 70 A.D. Unforgettable, albeit confusing in parts.
