Kate Fletcher is an Ecological Design Consultant whose clients include Marks and Spencer, TerraPlana, Clarks, People Tree, Intermediate Technology Development Group. She has a PhD (1999) from Chelsea College of Art & Design, The London Institute, for which she investigated the development of environmentally responsible design strategies in the UK Textile Industry.

Paul Hawken's bestselling books include Blessed Unrest, Natural Capitalism, and The Next Economy. He has also written dozens of articles, op-eds, and papers concerning the responsibility of business to the natural environment. His writings have appeared in the Harvard Business Review, Inc magazine, the Boston Globe, the Utne Reader, and more than a hundred other publications.

Thoughtful approach to sustainable fashion design

This is a practical, well-researched and thoughtful guide to making better fashion products -- from the impacts of raw material selection, to the variety of finishing techniques and other inputs, to how we think about product design and its use and eventual disposal. This is a must-read for fashion designers who want to design better product that has less of an impact on the planet, as well as anyone in the apparel sector that has an interest in sustainable apparel and its lifecycle. Kate Fletcher and Lynda Grose have done a masterful job of compiling best practices, words of wisdom and detailed fashion experience in this interesting and useful read.

Assigned text book for my sustainability class, and this book really does shed a light on how our society has quickly adapted to the "Gotta have it now" phase. This book lays out the cause and effect of the choices we make, the clothing we take advantage off, and how much we consume when laundering our garments.

What a great book for a Textiles teacher and students alike. It is set out in three sensible sections so that you can clearly see what each topic is and what is contained within. I also liked the way that there is some focus on what actions an individual can take as opposed to just dealing with the actions of designers and large organisations.

There is a good mixture of informative text and applicable diagrams and photos. I recommend this book to those who want to know more about fashion and how it is linked to sustainability.

About the Author
Professor P. Hariharan is a Research Fellow in the Division of Telecommunications and Industrial Physics of CSIRO in Sydney and a Visiting Professor at the University of Sydney. His main research interests are interferometry and holography. He is a Fellow of SPIE (The International Society for Optical Engineering), the Optical Society of America (OSA), the Institute of Physics, London, and the Royal Photographic Society. He was a vice-president and then the treasurer of the International Commission of Optics, as well as a director of SPIE. Honors he has received include OSA’s Joseph Fraunhofer Award, the Henderson Medal of the Royal Photographic Society, the Thomas Young Medal of the Institute of Physics, London, SPIE’s Dennis Gabor Award and, most recently, SPIE’s highest award, the Gold Medal.

Good For Beginners But Needs Beefing Up on Techniques

Okay, this is a good primer for those who lack an adequate background in optics and lasers. The chapters will highlight the important concepts to understand interferometry. The lacking part is the actual discussion of various techniques which can be used for various materials. But, I would probably recommend this anyways since everyone needs a refresher. Otherwise, you should definitely read up on applications listed in the references. Hariharan has another book also on interferometry which is about the same but presented in a different light so to speak. This is a pretty standard technique so you will have no trouble to pick up where this textbook lacks. Also, you should really cover this short overview on optics by reading any undergrad textbook such as the Pedrotti text.
